Riot’s new tactical first-person shooter is being slated as a mix of Overwatch’s heroes with Counter-Strike’s shooting mechanics, but as former CS:GO pro Maniac explains, it’s the latter that is crucial to success in Valorant.
“Counter-Strike and Valorant are very similar”, Maniac begins, explaining how natural it felt to shoot the weapons and master the basic movement, given their familiarity.
Maniac was playing the game at Riot’s online boot camp, where he was mixed with other players from all different gaming experience and backgrounds, and said there was a noticeable advantage for FPS players, who could instantly pick up the aiming and shooting mechanics.

“It was easier for us to get in touch with the game, understand how it works,” he continues, “I’m talking about Counter-Strike players obviously, I’m also talking about Overwatch players.”
For CS players especially though, it’s more than just the mechanics of the games that feel natural. The very essence of the game mode itself: 5v5, attack vs defense, and two bombsites (in Valorant, there is actually a map with three bombsites).
