Madame Web is in cinemas now, so will there be a sequel happening anytime soon? Here’s what the movie sets up, as well as what it doesn’t.

Madame Web is the live-action debut of a character that launched in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man back in 1980.

Dakota Johnson plays Cassie Webb, the paramedic whose mother was bitten by a spider during her birth in 1973, precipitating the character’s clairvoyant powers appearing in 2003.

Will there be a Madame Web 2?

Ezekiel has visions of super-powered Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Conner), and Anya (Isabela Merced) murdering him. Which is why he wants to kill them to prevent that fate. But he fails, with Cassie killing him first.

Then in the film’s final scene, while Cassie talks about the four women’s collective futures, we see a montage of the friends – now costumed and powered up – fighting crime as a team. In these visions, Cassie is wearing Madame Web’s classic red costume from the comics. So any potential sequel would revolve around the girls developing their spider-powers, and forming that team with Cassie.

Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) also gives birth to Peter Parker at the end of the movie, paving the way for Spider-Man to play some part in any future film.

As well as this, during an interview with GamesRadar, Johnson was asked if she’d be interested in returning to the role if she was given the chance.

The star was quick to reply, revealing, “If they want me to come back then I definitely will,” Johnson began. “I have no idea what’s in store.”

A decision regarding any sequel will doubtless depend on Madame Web’s box office performance. And with the movie tracking to open at around the $30 million mark in the US – meaning an even worse debut than Morbius – don’t hold your breath for Madame Web 2. But we’ll update this article accordingly should anything be announced.
