Mel and Jack have had plenty of ups and downs in Virgin River, but their parenting journey might reach its conclusion in Virgin River Season 7.
The anchoring point of Virgin River since its first season has been the budding romance between Mel and Jack. Ever since Mel found her fresh start in the fictional village, she and Jack have been entangled in each other – and their fair share of drama.
At the start of Season 5 Part 1, Mel suffered a miscarriage, throwing doubt on whether the pair would ever be able to fulfill their future dream of becoming parents.
With the couple now stronger than ever. The loved-up pair have now gotten married, so the question is once again raised: will Mel and Jack become parents in Virgin River Season 7? Warning: spoilers ahead!
Did Mel and Jack become parents in Virgin River Season 6?
No – but thanks to Episode 10’s cliffhanger, Mel and Jack’s adoption journey is likely being set up for Season 7.
After Season 5’s miscarriage, Mel and Jack have thrown all of their efforts and passion into each other. They’ve had the overarching storyline of their wedding in Season 6, with Mel equally occupied with her work at the newly established birthing center.
However, the final few minutes of ‘The Big Day’ could be set to change everything now that the couple is hitched.
After Mel and Jack do the, ahem, marital deed, Mel’s surrogate patient turns up at the cabin – the parents are backing out of the adoption. The surrogate wants Mel to have the baby, leaving her stunned.

Whether Mel will go through with the surrogate’s wishes remains to be seen, but the couple’s flightiness was set up much earlier in the season. Helicopter parenting over their surrogate, they stressed themselves out over every minute detail.
Even so… we don’t even know what Jack has to say about the surprise situation.
What do the original books tell us?
The original Virgin River series tells us Jack and Mel have two kids, called David and Emma. As we well know now, the TV show hasn’t followed the book’s plot to the T.
In the franchise’s first installment, Mel and Jack get married – and stay that way. There’s none of the drama with Charmaine, miscarriages, or general on-off-again vibes we’ve seen over the five seasons so far.
That’s not to say the book’s plot won’t be picked up further down the line in the binge-worthy TV show. As we know, time moves incredibly slowly on screen, so it would take a long while for the couple to have two kids… unless a surprise adoption speeds things along, of course.
Virgin River Season 6 is on Netflix now. Check out our series recap and ending explained, the verdict of Preacher’s trial, and what Everett had to tell Mel.
