Over on X, those who’ve watched it (likely multiple times) are already taking sides. Another step towards a new rom-com wave? A so-bad-it’s-good cringe-fest? A genuinely enjoyable romp? According to fans, there’s no clear-cut answer.

Many were quick to criticize, with some comments saying: “What are we doing to our finest actresses? I’m tired of every new attempted rom-com looking like this.”

Others also addressed the casting of Anne Hathaway, saying: “Anne Hathaway you got an Oscar on your shelf, like why is she applying to McDonald’s with a Harvard degree?” and: “Annie you have an Oscar, you don’t need to keep doing this.”

“Rom-com renaissance took twelve steps back,” another user suggested.

“Is the acclaimed novel in the room with us?” one user asked. The dragging of the “acclaimed novel” blurb came up frequently, likely referring to the misconception that The Idea of You book was originally Harry Styles fanfiction.

However, others seemed to relish in the idea of the movie. Although nobody has outright stated that it looks good, there are plenty who seem to think it’ll be worth the watch anyway.

“A wildly unserious film, I will be seated,” one comment said. Another followed a similar thought, writing: “This Lifetime Movie a** trailer, I will be there seated on premiere day.”

“REAL movies are BACK,” one user even declared.

The Idea of You will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 2, 2024.
