Jack Kesy as Hellboy in The Crooked Man.Ketchup Entertainment

A new Hellboy movie, The Crooked Man, jumpscared fans with its first trailer on July 1, 2024, and we’ve all got the same questions.

The Crooked Man trailer revealed a horror skew and a fresh ‘Red’ actor following in the footsteps of Ron Perlman and David Harbour. However, hardly anyone knew the new movie existed, let alone would be released soon after.

The 2024 film had its fair share of controversy – rumors about the use of generative AI were shot down – and the response from franchise fans has been lukewarm.

If that’s not spooky enough, a local devil connected to Hellboy’s past is calling the shots: the Crooked Man.

The story is based on the comic books of the same name.

The film is being marketed as a horror flick, so we expect it to have a darker tone and more frights than Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy movies or the 2019 film.

Brian Taylor – who co-helmed the Crank movies and Gamer – directs, making this his first superhero movie since Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man teaser trailer

The Hellboy teaser trailer was released on July 1, 2024.

The footage shows the film’s practical makeup, isolating setting, and cool-toned visuals. Paired with those is a string-based score, fitting the scarier angle The Crooked Man has opted for.

Age rating

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is R-rated.

This makes sense, given the horror elements and the general mature tone of Hellboy.

Why fans are divided

The 2024 Hellboy trailer was met with a damp reception from some people who said it has a low-budget look.

One fan said on X/Twitter, “Almost thought this was a fan-made film at first glance.”

Others were disappointed to see it out of Del Toro’s hands (although, 2008 was the last time he dipped into this world, with Hellboy II: The Golden Army), writing, “If it’s not a Guillermo film I’m not watching.”

This sentiment was echoed with a post saying, “Some Hollywood exec said, ‘Let’s make a cheap budgeted horror movie with a popular IP.’”

However, you can’t judge a book by its cover, nor a movie by its trailer – if we could, Suicide Squad would have been the best movie of all time.

The Crooked Man might be more than the sum of its parts. And Mike Mignola, the original Hellboy creator, is involved, which gave some people hope this might be a great adaptation. “This Hellboy flick looks like a Mike Mignola story, and Jack Kesey has the comic-accurate aesthetic,” one fan said.
