Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ sequel may not be the only movie to tackle Jesus’ resurrection: the creator of The Chosen wants to do his own movie.

In 2004, Gibson directed one of the most controversial movies in cinema history: The Passion of the Christ, chronicling Jesus Christ’s final agonizing hours, from Judas’ betrayal and the scourging at the pillar to his crucifixion. While widely lauded, it was also hit with criticism over its graphic violence, anti-Semitism allegations, and questions were raised over the Pope’s view on the film.

The director isn’t done, though: as he’s said, we only know “how it begins.” He intends to make a sequel exploring the resurrection, only briefly seen at the end of the original movie.

However, he may have some competition from the man behind The Chosen, the Christian TV phenomenon.

The Chosen creator and Mel Gibson want to make movies about Jesus’ resurrection

In a recent interview with Newsweek, Dallas Jenkins teased a possible movie about the resurrection – which could end up going against Mel Gibson’s sequel if their releases align.

“We’re hoping also to potentially do a feature film within that whole storyline, so we’ve got some plans for that that we’re developing now,” he said.

There has been some speculation that Jenkins had spoken with Gibson about the project – while he hasn’t confirmed nor died those rumors, he has addressed the possibility of two separate films adapting the story.

“Many people have wanted us to connect because we’re the directors of big Bible projects… hey, if Mel Gibson wants to do a Resurrection sequel to The Passion of the Christ, I’ll be there to see it, but I know it will definitely look different from mine,” he added.

“Some of the things I’ve heard him say about Heaven and Hell, and that kind of a fever dream, that’s more Mel’s style than mine.”

Gibson’s movie is still in development. In an earlier chat with Stephen Colbert, he hinted we could see Jesus in “another realm”, suggesting it would involve the Harrowing of Hell.

The Chosen Season 4 is still in cinemas now – here’s how to get tickets and when to expect it on streaming.
