The Boys Season 4: Frenchie’s sexuality explained

Frenchie’s romantic life heads in a new direction in The Boys Season 4, so you might be wondering: what is his sexuality? And is he in a relationship with Kimiko?

The latest season of The Boys was largely dominated by Homelander and his bid to Make America Super Again, while Butcher and the Boys tried to create a virus strong enough to stop him.

Still, there’s a lot of plot to deal with, and the smaller details like relationships often fall under the radar a bit in this superhero TV show.

But, we didn’t miss all the twists and turns of Frenchie’s love life this season, and The Boys Season 4 finale had one more surprise in store. Here’s what’s going on.

Frenchie’s sexuality explained

As is revealed in The Boys Season 4, Frenchie is bisexual. He starts a relationship with Colin, a fellow Narcotics Anonymous member who works for Starlight House after Frenchie introduced him to Annie.

What’s great about this development is that it doesn’t make a big deal out of it, and instead, his relationship with Colin is woven into the story naturally.

And while many viewers have expressed their surprise at the news, others knew long before he and Colin slept together, or even before he and Kimiko shared a kiss in The Boys Season 3.

One person posted on Reddit four years ago, “He referred to Jay as ‘my Dorothy’ and kissed his hand, wanted transgender strippers at MM’s bachelor party, has kissed Hughie, told MM to have an open mind. I’ve always gotten bisexual vibes.”

Another replied, “As a bisexual person, I would love it to be true (to think of a character whose sexuality isn’t really important to the plot is something I’ve been waiting for f**king ever).”

Despite the series taking shots at the far-righters and the woke-phobic side of society, there have been a number of complaints from the toxic side of the fandom about Frenchie’s same-sex love interest.

But creator Eric Kripke has a bit of advice for those complaining at the show for being too “woke”: “Go watch something else.”

“I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show. Anyone who wants to call the show ‘woke’ or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologize for what we’re doing. Some people who watch it think Homelander is the hero. What do you say to that?

“The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them. So if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands.”

Frenchie has a dark secret

Unfortunately, Frenchie’s relationship with Colin cannot last. In The Boys Season 4 Episode 4, Frenchie struggles to deal with the guilt over the fact he killed Colin’s family.

All Colin knows is, his family were killed by a man with a strange scar on his ankle. Frenchie has that scar but has managed to keep it hidden until now. But in the new episode of The Boys, he finally admits to what he did, leaving Colin distraught and threatening to kill Frenchie if he ever comes near him again.

Is Frenchie in a relationship with Kimiko?

The pair have their ups and downs, but by the end of Season 4, they share a kiss and look to be on track for a (sort of) happy ending.

Despite trying to give it a go in The Boys Season 3, Frenchie and Kimiko decided to remain in a loving but platonic relationship throughout much of Season 4.

Ever since meeting in the first chapter of the Amazon Prime Video series, the pair have been joined at the hip, leading to the assumption that they would end up together romantically.

After a long will-they-won’t-they run, Kimiko kisses Frenchie in Season 3 Episode 5 while she’s recovering in the hospital. Both of them look rather shocked, with Frenchie walking out (only to be intercepted by Little Nina).

Later, they address the situation, with Kimiko explaining that the kiss felt weird but not because it was bad or that they don’t love each other: it’s because they’re more than lovers; they’re family.

In The Boys Season 4, they continue to be each other’s rocks while dealing with their past traumas. Meanwhile, Kimiko admits to Frenchie she slept with someone else in a bid to urge him to go for it with Colin if it will make him happy.

Frenchie’s relationship with Colin takes a dark turn, as we know. And then, his bond with Kimiko takes a dramatic turn for the better by the ending of Season 4, as they realize they want to give it another go.

Frenchie and Kimiko run away together to escape Homelander‘s new totalitarian regime, but they are captured just as they look home free. Kimiko is held captive by Sam, while Frenchie is lured into a riot van by Cate. We’ll have to see if the pair can be reunited in The Boys Season 5.

Frenchie’s sexuality in the comics

Frenchie’s sexuality was never explicitly confirmed in The Boys comics, which is a big part of the reason this reveal in the show has caused such a stir.

Obviously, the comics don’t have as much time and freedom to explore characters in the kind of detail a TV show can.

So, while Frenchie was always presented as being non-monogamous in the comics, it was never suggested whether this was with males, females, or both.
