Just one year after the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination and Nintendo are teaming up again for a new movie set in the world of Mario.
As the second-highest-grossing movie of 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was nothing short of a phenomenon. You couldn’t even walk out the front door without hearing Jack Black’s moody ‘Peaches’ ballad. Safe to say, it was easily the most popular animated movie of last year.
Since its release, fans have been wondering when a sequel was going to be greenlit. With a box office return like that, how could it not?
Well, a new press release has just officially confirmed that there is a new Super Mario Bros. movie in the works — just not as a straight-up sequel.

The release is careful not to describe the new movie as a sequel, and instead describes the project as being “based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” Whether this means the movie will focus on characters other than Mario and Luigi is yet to be confirmed, as details remain sparse for now.
The press release reads: “By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.”
The new movie will be co-produced by Illumination once again, and will also bring back the writer of the 2023 Mario movie, Matthew Fogel. It’s also noted that it will be released in global markets outside the US throughout April 2026.
