As Squid Game Season 2 returns this year, we’ve gathered all the latest information on Netflix’s hit show as viewers gear up for the highly-anticipated second chapter.
Out of nowhere, Netflix produced one of the biggest and best TV shows of the 2020s with Squid Game.
Millions flocked to the streaming service to binge the K-drama phenomenon. Naturally, then, a second season was quickly lined up.
It’s one of the most anticipated K-drama releases of 2024, and we’ve got all the details you need to get excited for Squid Game Season 2.
Squid Game Season 2 release date
Squid Game Season 2 arrives on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
News was announced earlier in the year alongside the first teaser trailer. Not only did Netflix confirm Season 2’s release date, but the streaming giant also revealed ‘The Final Season’ is set to conclude the show in 2025.
Netflix confirmed Season 2’s 2024 release at the very start of the year, though no exact date was given. Lee recently spoke with Business Insider about his role in the Star Wars series The Acolyte and revealed Squid Game “will be released in December.”
According to What’s on Netflix, Squid Game was set to start filming its second season in July 2023 and continue for 10 months.
While Season 1 reportedly took Dong-hyuk 10 years to write, thankfully this season didn’t take quite as long.
When asked early on, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos did confirm the hit series would return, saying, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”
Recent news by OSEN revealed Squid Game Season 2 has wrapped filming and so has Season 3 with the cast having a two-day wrap party. According to an inside source, before Netflix later confirmed, both seasons were filmed back-to-back with a continuous storyline.
With Season 2 set to release this year, and Season 3 in 2025, there won’t be a long wait between both seasons. It’s reported Season 2 will consist of six episodes, three shorter than the original season, with Season 3 also having six to seven.
Squid Game Season 2 cast
Lee Jung-Jae will reprise his role as Seong Gi-hun. Additionally, Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the participant recruiter will return for Squid Game Season 2.
When discussing the return with Deadline, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk suggested he’ll “try something to bring back [dead characters] in Season 2.” That could mean anything from brief flashbacks to potential throwback episodes set before or during the first batch of episodes.
“So many characters died, especially beloved ones. I’m sorry I killed them so easily; I didn’t know this was coming,” he told Reuters. Hwang also wants to “revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died.”

But given how Season 1 wraps itself up, we’re expecting to see a virtually entirely new lineup in Season 2. While it probably won’t happen, the director even expressed interest in nabbing Leonardo DiCaprio for the series.
As for unfamiliar faces, the second season has cast more actors playing undetermined roles. Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun have all been added to the roster.
Eight new cast members were also announced on June 29, 2023. Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an are all on board for Squid Game Season 2.
The new chapter will also introduce a boyfriend for Young-hee, the infamous animatronic doll from the Red Light, Green Light game. Who will voice Cheoul-su remains to be seen.

What will Squid Game Season 2 be about?
Squid Game Season 2 will follow Seong Gi-hun as he looks to take down those behind the titular torture contest. It will also deal with the fallout of Gi-hun choosing to remain in Korea instead of joining his daughter in the US.
While an initial teaser didn’t reveal all too much, an accompanying press release detailed the events of Season 2 and beyond.
Taking place three years after Season 1, in line with our real passage of time, Player 456, Seong Gi-hun “remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.”

After first searching for “the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway,” Gi-hun’s efforts eventually lead him back to the deadly competition. “To end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
Gi-hun and the mysterious ‘Front Man’ are set to go head to head in bigger ways than before, with their clash continuing not only through Season 2, but into the third and final season as well, as confirmed by Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Netflix released a new teaser trailer for Squid Game on August 11, 2024.
The streaming platform gave fans a new look at some players in the iconic green jackets. While we didn’t get a full look at new cast members in action, we did see our old friend Seong Gi-hun looking serious as he gears up to set up his master plan.
Because viewers got attached to so many players in Season 1, only time will tell if these new characters will capture the audience’s hearts.
