From Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story to Michael Bay’s first true crime venture, here’s your guide to the new documentaries hitting Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Max, and more in September 2024.

The past month has seen a number of notable entries to the true crime genre, with Netflix leading the charge with American Murder: Laci Peterson. Peacock also looked back at the ’00s case, albeit from a totally different perspective, dropping Face to Face with Scott Peterson less than a week later.

But the Peterson case wasn’t the only to come under the spotlight. Worst Ex Ever also landed on Netflix in August, examining four sinister cases of love gone wrong.

While Netflix continues to be the best streaming service for true crime, all platforms have something unique to offer, with plenty of real-life stories and shows making their streaming debut. So, here’s a rundown of all the new documentaries and true crime shows to mark in your calendar.

Top documentary and true crime picks for September 2024

Born Evil: The Serial Killer and The Savior (Max) – September 2

Michael Bay and true crime are not two entities you’d normally put together, but the famed big-budget director is entering the chat with his first-ever docu-series, Born Evil: The Serial Killer and The Savior.

Set to air across three nights, the episodes take a deep dive into Hadden Clark, said to be one of the lesser known but most terrifying serial killers in recent decades. “Born Evil is my first venture into the documentary world, and it revolves around a serial killing family you have never heard of,” said Bay.

“The focus of this five-hour series is on the youngest son, Hadden Clark, whom I spent countless hours personally speaking to in prison so that I could get into the mind and psychology of a person who the FBI refers to as ‘a person of interest’ in over 20 states. Born Evil could potentially open the door to solving many cold case murders.”

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (Hulu) – September 6

Ever wonder what’s going on with Mormon MomTok? Whether you’ve heard of the swinging rumors or not, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is set to pull back the curtain on this world and speak with those involved, including Taylor Frankie Paul, Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Taylor, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Mathews, and Whitney Leavitt.

As per the official synopsis, “The scandalous world of a group of Mormon mom influencers implodes when they get caught in the midst of a swinging sex scandal that makes international headlines.

“Now, their sisterhood is shaken to its core. Faith, friendships, and reputations are all on the line. Will #MomTok be able to survive and continue to give the rulebook a run for its money, or will this group fall from grace?”

American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez (Hulu) – September 18

For those not familiar with the case, Aaron Hernandez was a former NFL star whose promising career was overshadowed by his involvement in multiple violent crimes, including the 2013 murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. This led to his conviction and eventual suicide in prison in 2017.

The first season of American Sports Story, a new anthology series executive produced by Ryan Murphy and creator Stu Zicherman, will chart the rise and fall of Hernandez, exploring the “disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.”

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Netflix) – September 19

Following on from Murphy’s divisive Dahmer series, Monster Season 2 is set to delve into one of the most highly publicized true crime cases of the century: Lyle and Erik Menendez, who are currently behind bars for the 1989 murders of their parents, Kitty and Jose.

While they were found guilty, evidence has emerged over the years supporting the theory that the brothers had faced years of abuse at the hands of their parents. And it appears this series will delve into the allegations in some way.

As per the official synopsis: “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?”
