Mission: Impossible 7 was a critical success last year, so you might be wondering about the Mission: Impossible 8 release date. Here’s what you need to know, including cast additions, plot details, and more.
Tom Cruise continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in filmmaking and action movies. It’s safe to say the Mission: Impossible franchise is right at the heart of that endeavor.
As we wait for the new movie in the saga, and analyze the crumbs left behind by the Dead Reckoning ending, it feels like there is so much still to uncover for Ethan Hunt and the crew.
So, what’s going on with the Mission: Impossible 8 release date? Who’s joining the team for the next action movie in the series? And what will the next mission involve? We’ve got all the answers right here.
Mission: Impossible 8 release date
The Mission: Impossible 8 release date is May 23, 2025.
The sequel was originally due to arrive way back on August 5, 2022. But, due to global restrictions, it was delayed until November 4, 2022, before being shifted again to July 7, 2023. Dead Reckoning eventually took that spot, and while Part 2 looked set for a 2024 release, it’s now been pushed back again to 2025.
Originally, it was going to be filmed back-to-back with Dead Reckoning. However, this wasn’t feasible in the pandemic. Principal photography kicked off in March 2022, and in trademark M:I style, it’s been another globe-trotting shoot. But, that was all halted due to the now-resolved writers’ and actors’ strikes.
At the premiere for Dead Reckoning, McQuarrie told Collider: “We’ve shot all but one of our international locations. We’ve shot our big action except for the biggest set piece, the central set piece of the film, which is massive and unlike anything we’ve done, and, I think, unlike anything you’ve seen.”
Mission: Impossible 8 title
While unconfirmed, Mission: Impossible 8 is reportedly ditching Dead Reckoning Part 2 as its title.
This could be a bit baffling, given it’s a Part 2, but we’ll have to wait and see. There’s no indication of what it’ll be titled instead.
Is there a Mission: Impossible 8 trailer?
There isn’t a trailer for Mission: Impossible 8… but there is footage. It features Tom Cruise standing on top of a plane, because of course he is.
To open the first screening of Top Gun: Maverick at CinemaCon, Cruise and McQuarrie sent over an incredible video of the star standing on top of a biplane while filming in South Africa, one of the locations in Mission: Impossible 8. “See you at the movies,” he says, as the plane plunges downward.
In another video from South Africa, Cruise took viewers with him as he skydived. “Thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime,” he said, coming amid the box office domination of Top Gun: Maverick. So, we can expect some hefty aerial sequences in the next Mission: Impossible movie.
Who’s in the Mission: Impossible 8 cast?
The usual suspects will be back for Mission: Impossible 8, including Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames.

The leading trio will once again be joined by their new ally, Grace, played by Hayley Atwell. We will also see franchise regulars like Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, and Pom Klementieff reprise their roles in the Mission: Impossible cast.
We can expect the following actors and characters in the Mission: Impossible 8 cast:
- Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
- Hayley Atwell as Grace
- Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
- Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
- Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis
- Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge
- Esai Morales as Gabriel
- Shea Whigham as Jasper
- Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas
- Pom Klementieff as Paris
- Holt McCallany
- Nick Offerman
- Janet McTeer
- Hannah Waddingham
- Lucy Tulugarjuk
- Rolf Saxon
There are two people we’ll (probably) not see again, though. Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust and Cary Elwes; Denlinger, were killed off in Dead Reckoning.
There are a host of new additions, but their exact roles haven’t been confirmed: Holt McCallany, Hannah Waddingham, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Rolf Saxon, Janet McTeer, and Nick Offerman.
Mission: Impossible 8 plot
After the events of Dead Reckoning, we’re expecting Ethan Hunt and his IMF team to race against Gabriel to find the Entity; more specifically, the Sevastapol submarine that holds its secrets.
However, McQuarrie isn’t even at the finish line yet in terms of piecing the story together. “I don’t know what the ending is, so I couldn’t tell you,” he told Collider. “I’m not being evasive. I could tell you I know what the end is, but I can’t guarantee that’ll be the ending when we get there.”
He added: “Tom and I never obsess about executing the plan. We always have a direction, we always have a place we’re going. In retrospect, it sounds as though we’re just flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go along. That’s not an accurate description. You are definitely flying in a direction, you’re definitely prepared. You couldn’t be that cavalier without somebody getting seriously physically hurt. These things are planned within an inch of their life. Along the way, we see a shiny object and go for it.”
So, we don’t know how he will do it — or if he will even make it out alive but one way or another — Ethan has to put a stop the The Entity and save the world one last time.
It was reported in May 2024 that a mishap involving a submarine had caused issues to the production and had ballooned the budget to turn Mission Impossible 8 into one of the most expensive movies ever. So, whatever is going to happen, it sounds like there’s going to be more crazy stunts and underwater chaos.
