The Minecraft live-action movie is almost here after ten years of development, with some rather big expectations to meet. Here’s everything we know about the game adaptation.
Video game movies and TV show adaptations have never been more popular. Between the Super Mario Bros. movie, The Last of Us, and other new movies, the ‘curse’ has been lifted.
One game that many will be shocked to hear is coming to the screen is Minecraft. While it’s one of the most successful games of all time, the design and gameplay don’t lend themselves to the big screen, at least on paper.
However, with a smaller cast confirmed and Warner Bros attached, interest in the adaptation has grown. As such, here is everything you need to know, including a release date and trailer.
Release date: When will the film come out?
The Minecraft movie release date is Friday, April 4, 2025
The ten-year wait is nearly over after the project was confirmed by Warner Bros. back in 2014. Interestingly, much of its teenage player base at the time of announcement will be adults by the time it hits screens. Luckily, Minecraft has proved to be evergreen.
Who’s in the Minecraft movie cast?
The Minecraft movie cast is a star-studded lineup that includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Momoa, Daniele Brooks, Emma Myers, Matt Berry, and Hansen have been known for a while, but Black’s casting was announced on January 2, 2024, to much fan excitement after his success as Bowser in the Super Mario movie.

The most exciting name on that list, though (at least for us, we’re a little older than the target audience), is Coolidge. The comedy gem from The White Lotus was added to the cast on January 17, 2024, in an unknown role.
What will the Minecraft movie plot be?
The official synopsis for the film reads as the following:
“The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”
Based on what we’ve seen so far from the adaptation, the Minecraft movie appears to draw inspiration from the Story Mode game in that each creature will have some role to play, whether that be in helping the human characters take down the Ender Dragon or try to stop them from doing so.
Furthermore, Black’s Steve is teased to be part of the Minecraft world instead of the reality from which the other characters have teleported.
