Madame Web is in cinemas now, so we’re doing a deep-dive into the movie’s ending, as well as what that might mean for the future of the character.
Directed by SJ Charles – from a script she co-wrote with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Claire Parker – Madame Web is the character’s first live-action movie.
Dakota Johnson plays Cassie Webb – aka Madame Web – a paramedic who develops clairvoyant powers, which she uses to do battle with the movie’s villain Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim).
Below, we’ll explain how that plays out, and what it sets up, so beware of MADAME WEB SPOILERS ahead…
Madame Web ending explained
Ezekiel is haunted by visions of three super-powered women killing him sometime in the future. So he hunts for them throughout the movie, eventually discovers their identities, and endeavors to murder all three before they can do the same to him.
Those women are Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Conner), and Anya (Isabela Merced), and over the course of the film, they form a bond with Cassie, with the movie culminating in the four women fighting Ezekiel during the film’s dockyard finale.
Cassie’s powers are developing throughout the movie, and in this sequence, she unlocks her full potential by creating multiple versions of herself to save the three girls. Then it’s Cassie v Ezekiel, a brawl that ends with Cassie knocking him off the top of a Pepsi-Cola sign. In a bizarre piece of product placement, the advert’s giant letters then fall on Ezekiel, killing him.

Cassie herself falls into a nearby river, and the girls rescue her, performing CPR they learned earlier in the movie to save her life. But her survival comes at a price, with Cassie seemingly losing her sight.
Glimpsing the team’s super-powered future
The final scene finds Cassie wearing dark glasses, and now in a wheelchair. The girls visit her with food and she knows what they’ve ordered, suggesting that her clairvoyance is even more powerful now.
“I can see better than ever,” she tells the women. Then over a montage of the super-powered trio fighting crime in the future, Cassie explains that they will stand up for what they believe, never give up, and discover they are more powerful than they thought.
We also get a glimpse of Cassie – now wearing Madame Web’s classic red costume – working with them. Before she ends the film with these words: “Whatever the future holds, we’ll be happy. And you know the best thing about the future? It hasn’t happened yet.”
Does Madame Web have a post-credits scene?
No, Madame Web does not have a post-credits scene. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told ComicBook.com: “It wasn’t a conscious decision to say ‘We’re not going going to do that since everybody else does it,’ but we really liked having the ambiguity of it and having the promise of it that stood hand-to-hand where that other piece would then solidify it in a certain direction.”
Instead, the screen fades to black, and ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries play as the credits roll.
