Suzume has been a critically acclaimed and audience-adored movie ever since it came out in 2022, but where can you watch it, and is it streaming?
Suzume no Tajimari, from Your Name director Makoto Shinaki, is one of the best anime movies of 2022. Just like his previous films, it’s a gorgeous, thrilling story that involves a young protagonist caught up in an engrossing mythology.
The film follows 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, who has to close mythical doors around Japan to stop disaster. She’s chased by her worried aunt in what becomes a formative experience, to say the least.
But if you’re wanting to finally check it out – or just see it again – then where can you watch it, and is it streaming?
Where can I stream Suzume?
Suzume is available to stream on the leading anime platform Crunchyroll and also on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Suzume has been streaming on Crunchyroll from November 16, 2023, while it has found its home on Netflix from April 5, 2024.
The critically acclaimed movie first hit cinemas in Japan in November 2022, before moving to global theatres in April 2023, distributed by Crunchyroll in partnership with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International. Crunchyroll handled the distribution of the movie outside of Asia.
Though Suzume is now available on Crunchyroll, some countries do not have access to the movie on the platform. The anime movie still unavailable on most of Southeast Asia and some other countries. However, Netflix has largely fixed this problem by making Suzume available to stream in 169 countries.
Suzume has since proven popular with audiences and critics alike, garnering a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As we state in our 4-star review: “While comparisons to Your Name feel uncalled for, it’ll likely be impossible to avoid. And, sadly, Suzume doesn’t quite live up to Makoto Shinkai’s previous work. However, the movie is still a fantastic piece of art, and we can definitely see improvements on the animation scale, along with the sheer scope of the story it’s willing to tell. This film definitely stands on its own two feet, and it’s certainly not a story you should close the door on.”

How to watch Crunchyroll from outside your location in 2024
Crunchyroll is the world’s best hub for streaming anime, whether it’s One Piece, Attack on Titan, or Jujutsu Kaisen and while Netlix and Amazon Prime are not known for being the site to go for anime, they are steadily adding to their collection of anime – and thanks to ExpressVPN, you can access the platforms’ full library even if you’re outside the US.
If you’re abroad, here’s what you need to do to access Crunchyroll’s full selection – and it really is this simple:
- Sign up for ExpressVPN, which has ultra-fast servers and offers a secure, private connection wherever you are in the world
- Connect to a location anywhere in the US; Express VPN allows you to choose from 24 different spots, from New Jersey to Santa Monica
- Visit Crunchyroll online or Netflix or Amazon Prime Video and start streaming all of your favorite anime – and perhaps some you’ve never watched.
Accessing Crunchyroll’s US roster makes a difference. For example, Hong Kong users only have access to less than 100 titles, while the US has nearly 1,000 movies and TV shows. Suzume’s inclusion in Netflix’s library has made the movie more accessible in many countries.
If you’re an avid fan of anime, you can also stream anime on Crunchyroll for free with an ad-supported plan. Or you can pay for a subscription – there’s even a 14-day free trial if you can’t quite make up your mind.
