We’ve seen Godzilla face off against King Kong, but now Spider-Man may be the one to beat, at least at the Oscars.

When it comes to action flicks this year, we’ve certainly had some great ones. This includes the likes of monster movie Godzilla Minus One, and animated feature Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

These films have proven successful both critically and commercially, so awards buzz was never off the table. And now, both films have been shortlisted for a specific Oscar.

Both movies will have to fight it out to be nominees in the 2024 Oscar for Visual Effects category. But of course, they’re not alone, and we have the full shortlist here below.

The shortlist of 2024 Oscar nominees for Visual Effects has been announced

After no doubt numerous movies pushing for an Oscar nod for their visual effects, the shortlist of finalists to be nominees for this year’s Academy Awards have finally been announced. And of course, it includes Godzilla Minus One and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

There’s been some snubs, but also some pleasant surprises. Now of course, this means that each listed film might still be cut for the final group of nominees, but at least they currently stand a chance.

Check out the full list of the 20 shortlisted nominees below, as listed by studio:

So far, the biggest snub upset seems to be the lack of Christopher Nolan’s summer blockbuster Oppenheimer, which prioritised practical effects over CGI. Especially when you consider that its Barbenheimer counterpart, Barbie, is included in the list, alongside currently unreleased Warner Bros. project Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Other surprises include Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which received ridicule from audiences for its CGI. In comparison, the lack of Disney‘s live-action Little Mermaid on the list seems like a snub to fans.

But ignoring the other competition, both Godzilla Minus One and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (which was somewhat of a surprise contender, being an animated movie) seem like strong options for the final group of nominees, as their visuals were a key aspect when it came to critics praising both movies.
