Fans of the Blue Beetle character got a huge surprise today, as he’s seemingly returning in the form of a new animated series.
The news comes exclusively via Deadline, which has learned from sources on the production that a new Blue Beetle animated series is in the works. Neither DC Comics nor the WB have commented on the news.
It’s a huge win for fans of Blue Beetle. The film was reviewed well by fans and critics and holds a 78% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.
But it is, by all accounts, a bomb. It only made $130 million against a budget that is said to be between $104 and $125 million.

Bringing it back as an animated series has definitely intrigued fans, as loyal fans celebrated the potential return of Blue Beetle on social media.
“Hopefully this does actually lead to another live-action movie as the article suggests because the first one was such a pleasant surprise and the cast nailed it,” one fan said, adding, “WBD should’ve spent less time and money hyping up The Flash and put more on Blue Beetle.”

“Let’s hope it’s animation is as good as the new Ninja Turtles show,” another added.
“I hope it has as much sauce as this would have,” one fan said, referencing the seemingly failed Batman Beyond feature film pitch.
According to Deadline, the hope is for the animated series to eventually lead to a revival of the live-action film franchise. As it stands, the original film is considered the first of James Gunn’s rebooted DCU.
Released in 2023, Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a listless college graduate who comes into possession of a mystical beetle scarab that bestows him otherworldly armor and powers.
Further info on the release date, casting, and plot details for the animated Blue Beetle series aren’t yet available. If it comes to fruition, it will join a slate of other hotly anticipated DC’s streaming offerings, including Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2.
