It’s not going to reinvent the rom-com genre, but there’s just enough in A Family Affair to make it a movie worth watching. Reviews are on the fence though, divided between loving and loathing the cheese.
Currently, A Family Affair has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 53%, with an audience score of 50%.
John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal wrote “As a parody of Hollywood excess and narcissism it is frequently laugh-out-loud; as a wannabe Hallmark Channel holiday movie – a segue that is nothing short of baffling – it is less than amusing.”
Tania Hussain of Collider added “The prospect of new Netflix rom-coms beaming with all-star casts always leaves us feeling a little excited, but the attractiveness alone isn’t enough to sustain the passion in our streaming relationship.”
However, Alexander Harrison from ScreenRant was more positive, stating “Despite flaws, A Family Affair holds together on the strength of its comedy, even if it suffers a bit from targeting a passive streaming audience.”
