New Apple AirPods X leaked with eye-popping price

Apple AirPods are infamously pricey, turning their very ownership into a meme of sorts, where only the most affluent dare wear them. But, a new leak from Target suggests an even more expensive model is on the way – AirPods X.

Regular AirPods (wireless headphones that connect to devices via Bluetooth) will set you back $159, or $199 with a wireless charger brand-new. The Pro model comes in at $249. When compared to cheaper Bluetooth ‘pods’, that can be picked up for a tenth of the price, it’s understandable why they have such a reputation.

We’re not going to get into the debate about whether this premium price is worth it, but there’s no denying that some of that cost is for the aesthetic appeal and the official Apple logo.

New AirPods X leaked

Never one to rest on their laurels, Apple is apparently planning to release a new model of AirPods, an over-ear version, called the X.

Per 9to5Mac, amidst reports that new AirPods would be launched in the first half of 2020, the new AirPods X will come in at a whopping $399.

Over-ear headphones are typically more expensive than their in-ear counterparts, and it’s a logical next step for the AirPods lineup.

YouTuber Jon Prosser posted an image on Twitter, stating: “Multiple Target employees have started reaching out to me about this,” with the name “Apple AirPods (X Generation).”

Also visible is the price tag at 399.99, although it should be noted that no currency is given. The image adjacent is simply a concept post, not an actual image of the rumored headphones.

There is some confusion around these headphones though, given Apple already sells the Beats brand of over-ear headphones. The AirPods X is expected to be “separate” from the Beats product line.

As for when they will be officially announced, most signs point to an Apple event in March. The tech giants are also expected to announce new iPad Pros and a potential iPhone 9 model. There’s no official event confirmed yet though.
