How to use PSVR2 on your PC

Turning your PlayStation VR2 headset into a Steam VR game-playing machine is finally feasible, but it takes more than just the new PSV2 adapter.

The PlayStation VR2 is a huge upgrade over the original PS VR headset, offering improvements on every feature, but keeping the same level of comfort and usability. 

However, some users want the new comfort advantages of the PSVR 2 while playing PC VR titles such as Half-Life Alyx, and may be wondering if it is possible to get the best of both worlds.

In August 2024, Sony released the PSVR2 PC adaptor, so now you can wonder no more.

But getting your PS VR2 set up on PC takes a lot more than just having the new Sony adapter so we’ve gathered all you need to know about using PS VR2 on your PC.

How to setup PSV2 app on Steam

  1. Open Steam on your desktop PC
  2. Navigate to to search bar in the top right corner
  3. Type ‘PlayStation VR2 App’ 
  4. Click on the green ‘Free’ button 
  5. Click ‘Install’ to download the PSVR2 app
  6. Navigate to to search bar in the top right corner
  7. Type ‘SteamVR’ into text box
  8. Click on the green ‘Free’ button 
  9. Click ‘Install’ to download the Steam VR app
  10. Find ‘PSVR2 App’ in Steam library & select ‘Launch’

Before downloading the PSVR2 app, ensure you already have Steam VR in your Steam game library. Similarly to the VR2 app, Steam VR is entirely free and gives you access to the library of VR games available on Steam.

How to connect PSV2 to PC using PC adaptor

  1. Connect PS VR2 adapter to USB port on PC
  2. Connect PS VR2 adapter to PC using DisplayPort cable
  3. Insert AC cable to power adaptor
  4. Connect PS VR headset into adaptor
  5. Turn on PS VR2 PC adaptor

Once the PlayStation VR2 app has launched, pair your controllers to the app using Bluetooth.

To pair your VR2 controllers, press and hold the PS & options buttons until you see your headset LED light flash.

You will need to add the controllers as a Bluetooth device, similar to that of your keyboard or gaming mouse. Once complete, you’ll be able to continue to the next step on the PSVR2 app.

To connect a PSVR 2 to your PC, you will need to buy the official PlayStation VR2 adaptor, which has an MSRP of $59.99. The official PSVR2 adapter is available from certain retailers and directly from the PlayStation website.

You will also need a DisplayPort cable that is compatible with the DisplayPort 1.4 standard and a gaming PC that can run VR.

Requirements for connecting your PC to PSVR 2

PSVR 2 on Steam VR is officially supported by Sony, provided you are using the official PlayStation VR2 adaptor.

Before shelling out for the $60 official adaptor, it is wise to check that your PC is capable of keeping up with the demands of VR.

PSVR 2 on SteamVR is officially supported by Sony, but you will still need a PC that meets the minimum requirements, as listed below.

  • CPU: Intel i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 or later
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 5500XR or later
  • Memory: 8GB+ RAM
  • Video Output: DisplayPort 1.4 (standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output port is required. Other adaptors will not work)
  • OS: Windows 10+
  • Additional Requirements: Bluetooth 4.0 or later

Limitations of using PSVR 2 on PC

Though being able to connect your PSVR 2 to a PC is a big step forward, it does come with some limitations.

Sony says that at present, users who use the PSVR 2 with a PC will not be able to use the following features:

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • Adaptive Triggers
  • Haptic Feedback (Except Rumble)

Other features such as the 2000 x 2040 per-eye resolution, finger-touch detection, and passthrough will all work as intended, however. More features may be added in software updates as the technology develops.
