A Starfield player was taken by surprise upon learning why the game wouldn’t let them fast travel from inside their ship.
The fast travel system in Bethesda Game Studios’ latest RPG seems pretty straightforward. Players can jump from one point to another while on foot or in outer space by simply opening up the map and plotting a course.
There are a few instances where this particular traveling option is off-limits in Starfield, though. Players who receive a “fast travel is currently unavailable” message during a quest would do well to complete whatever mission parameters are left.
The most common fast travel interruption comes from users still being in combat when trying to jump elsewhere. But one player learned the hard way that combat encounters can sneak up on you when they’re least expected.

A Reddit user recently shared a gameplay clip of themselves trying to fast travel in Bethesda’s new space-faring RPG. When the game wouldn’t set a course, the player stood up from the chair in their ship’s cockpit.

As soon as the cockpit animation concluded, the reason for the fast travel block became abundantly clear. There was a dinosaur-like creature aboard the spacecraft; thus, the game believed the user was in the middle of a combat encounter.
This stowaway couldn’t have been more unfriendly either, its roars and clawed slashes at the player providing the perfect jumpscare.
When asked how the creature ended up behind the captain’s chair, the Redditor noted that it must’ve spawned in from their last stop. “Well when I took off, I noticed a random animal on top of my ship as it flew away. Guess it spawned inside once it was finished loading me into space.”
Perhaps in-game explorers should take note. If fast travel on a ship in Starfield isn’t working, it may be because a dino-sized surprise quite literally waiting in the wings.
