The epic journey has finally come to an end, as the creator of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has revealed that work on the game has finally ceased.
While Fortnite might be a bigger multimedia crossover machine, it’s hard to argue that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate holds the greatest video game crossover of all time, bringing together industry icons like Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Cloud Strife, Pikachu, Solid Snake, and Link on modern consoles.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched at the end of 2018, but it went on to receive lots of post-launch DLC content. Since then, the game has added some new events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise, including Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Spirits.
The last big content update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate involved Sora from Kingdom Hearts being added as the final fighter. As is the case with all of the other characters in the game, Sora was set to receive an amiibo, now available online.
Sora’s amiibo is the end of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received a patch adding support for the Sora amiibo. This prompted Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai to post on Twitter/X, stating that his work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now complete.

Fans are likely disappointed to hear this, as the recent events released for the series’ anniversary led some to believe that we could see more content in the future. After all, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s DLC came out years after the fact, so the same could be true for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Sakurai has mentioned on his YouTube show that he’s already working on his next project, which some have speculated is a new Super Smash Bros. title for the Nintendo Switch’s successor. If that is the case, then it’s fitting that the work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is officially over.
If work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is over, then it also seems to end the speculation that work is being done on a Deluxe edition of the game for Nintendo’s new system, which is something fans have speculated about for years now.
It’s always sad when a project as incredible as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ends, but at least it ends on a fitting note. Sora was an amazing character to end the DLC reveals with, and his amiibo is the reason behind the final update for the game.
