Fans of Doom wanting to see their favorite first-person shooter character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate may need to brace themselves before reading further.
In an interview with Metro Gaming, Doom Eternal’s director Marty Stratton was asked about the rumors of Doom Slayer making his way to Nintendo’s flagship fighter.
“What about the rumors of Doom Slayer being in Smash Bros?” Metro asked a few days prior to the reveal of Blyleth as DLC fighter five. “Do you think it could ever happen?”

Stratton then revealed point-blank that the team had actually asked Nintendo directly about adding the character to the game.
As Metro Gaming noted in their interview, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima got Solid Snake to appear in Smash after asking Nintendo himself. In fact, the legendary game designer even wanted Snake in the franchise as far back as Melee, but had to wait until Brawl to get his wish.
When asked about if Nintendo would discount the possibility of Doom Slayer making it into the game due to the series’ blood and gore, Stratton side-stepped the question.

“I dunno. You would honestly have to ask them,” he said. “We’ve never been approached and said, ‘Hey can Doomguy be in Smash Bros.?’ But we’re open-minded if they wanna ask.”

According to Stratton, while he doesn’t know who on his team talked with Nintendo, he confirmed that they had “bantered” with the Japanese video game giant.
“We have a great relationship with them through bringing Doom 2016 to Switch and that kind of stuff. So we have great people over there but it’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool?’”

Unfortunately, the conversations never turned into anything serious so we’ll have to wait and see if anything develops in the far future. The six upcoming downloadable fighters as part of Smash’s Fighters Pass Volume 2 have already been decided upon so if Doom Slayer isn’t in the picture yet, the question remains: will there be a Volume 3 and will he be in that package?
As it stands, the second Fighters Pass isn’t going wrap up until December 31, 2021 so there’s still a long way to go until we hear any news of a third pass.
The Doom developers aren’t the only team who want a character to make it into Smash either. As Dexerto previously reported, the Overwatch developers said they’d be open to a hero appearing in Ultimate and the game’s director Jeff Kaplan specifically said he would like Tracer to blink into the fight.

For those wondering who the next downloadable fighter will be, the current theory is that it will be longtime favorite Crash Bandicoot. A new leaker who accurately claimed Blyleth would be DLC five also said that Crash would be the sixth.
Only time will tell if the leaks hold up and if Doom Slayer may finally get his moment to duke it out with the likes of Mario, Link and more.
