The Legendary Giratina is returning to 5-Star Raids in Pokemon Go with its Altered Forme, and we’ve got the best counters to help you take advantage of its weaknesses.
As 2024 comes to an end, the 5-Star Raid bosses are being switched up once again. Following in the footsteps of Genesect holding a Chill Drive is the Sinnoh region’s Legendary Ghost/Dragon-type Giratina in its Altered Forme.
While Giratina’s Origin Forme is a PvE champion, its Altered Forme is a top-tier PvP fighter in both the Ultra League and the Master League. It’s a must-have for those who want to dominate the Go Battle League, and now’s the perfect chance to catch one.
Giratina Altered Forme weaknesses in Pokemon Go
Giratina Altered Forme is a unique dual Ghost/Dragon-type Pokemon, which means it’s weak against Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice-type attacks. There’s plenty to play with here, but be careful when using Dragons as they have a weakness to their own typing.
As for Giratina’s strengths, there’s a lot to be aware of, as it’s resistant to Bug, Electric, Fire, Grass, Poison, and Water types, and double resistant to Fighting and Normal types. So, you better avoid using Pokemon of these types wherever possible.
Giratina Altered Forme best counters

Mega Garchomp | Dragon Tail & Outrage | |
Shadow Tyranitar | Bite & Brutal Swing | |
Shadow Salamence | Dragon Tail & Draco Meteor | |

Dawn Wings Necrozma | Psycho Cut & Moongeist Beam | |
Gengar | Lick & Shadow Ball | |
Gardevoir | Charm & Dazzling Gleam | |
Weavile | Snarl & Avalanche | |
Mamoswine | Powder Snow & Avalanche |
We’ve included a mix of Megas, Legendaries, Shadow, and more common Pokemon in the table above, so there should be something for every trainer to use.
If you don’t have any of those counters or their alternate forms, use your strongest Pokemon to target Giratina’s weaknesses. Just make sure that your team is properly leveled up and has matching movesets.
How to get Giratina Altered Forme in Pokemon Go
As with most of the other Legendaries, the only way to get Origin Forme Giratina is to challenge and defeat it in 5-Star Raid battles. Luckily for players, the recent Raid rotations are bringing this mighty Legendary back as a 5-Star Raid boss from December 26, 2024, until January 4, 2025.
Keep in mind that taking down Giratina Altered Forme won’t be easy, as Raid Bosses are some of the most difficult opponents you’ll face in the game and you’ll be required to team up with other trainers.

If you succeed, you can attempt a catch with the Premier Balls you’re given after the encounter. The amount you get will depend on your performance during the battle. But, remember that using Golden Razz Berries and landing Excellent Curveball Throws can increase your chances of catching it.
Giratina Altered Forme CP in Pokemon Go
As with every Raid Boss in the game, Giratina’s CP during a Raid battle won’t be the same once you manage to catch it. Plus, certain types of weather can increase such CP.
Raid Boss CP | 38,326 |
CP range once captured | 1848 – 1931 |
Fog/Windy weather CP range | 2310 – 2414 |
Field and Special Research CP range | 1386 – 1448 |
Giratina Altered Forme max CP (Level 50) | 3820 |
Giratina Altered Forme stats & moves
As a dual Ghost/Dragon-type Pokemon, Giratina Altered Forme has the following stats:
ATTACK | DEFENSE | STAMINA | CP |
---|---|---|---|
187 | 225 | 284 | 3820 |
Fast Moves
- Drago Breath (Dragon/STAB)
- Shadow Claw (Ghost/STAB)
Charged Moves
- Ancient Power (Rock)
- Shadow Sneak (Ghost/STAB)
- Dragon Claw (Dragon/STAB)
- Shadow Force (Ghost/STAB)
There aren’t any majorly threatening moves to watch out for here, but remember that Dragons – who make up plenty of Giratina’s counters – are weak against Dragon-type moves, so Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw will be a pain to deal with.
If you’re using an Ice-type counter like Galarian Darmanitan or Weavile, you’ll also need to watch out for the Rock-type Charged Move Ancient Power, which will make light work of them.
Can Giratina Altered Forme be Shiny?
Yes, Giratina Altered Forme can be Shiny in Pokemon Go. It made its debut when it appeared in 5-Star Raids in September 2019 and will be available to catch during this return, too.
Players can easily recognize Shiny Giratina Altered Forme by its beige body (which is usually gray), the turquoise stripes and horns on its chest and wings (usually red), and the silver details on its legs, neck, and head (usually golden).
As always, the chances of getting a Shiny variation are extremely low, and there aren’t any special methods to increase the odds. You’ll simply have to take part in as many Giratian Altered Forme Raids as possible and hope for the best.
That’s everything you need to know to defeat Giratina Altered Forme in Pokemon Go’s 5-Star Raid battles. Be sure to check out the latest Pokemon Go event, including the current Community Day and Spotlight Hours.
