Clamperl has two branched evolutions in the Pokemon franchise, but how exactly do you get Huntail or Gorebyss in Pokemon Go? Here’s all the information you need to get this Water-type creature and properly evolve it.
The Hoenn region’s Water-type Pokemon Clamperl was first introduced to Pokemon Go as part of the Clamperl Limited Research event in February 2019, but it’s been a pretty rare spawn ever since.
While getting Clamperl is difficult, getting both of its evolutions is even harder. It also doesn’t work the same as it does in the mainline games, where you would need a special item to get each evolution.
So if you’re looking to add both Huntail and Gorebyss to your collection in Pokemon Go, we’ve got all the details you need below.
How to get Clamperl in Pokemon Go
Even though Clamperl has been available in the game for quite a while, it is not so easy to spot this sea creature around. Currently, players can only find Clamperl in Pokemon Go as a wild encounter. However, its spawn rates are pretty low, so trainers looking for one have to be patient.
Previously, Clamperl could be found as a hatch from five and seven km Eggs, as well as a Tier 1 Raid boss and even as a reward for completing Field Research Tasks like “Make 3 Great Throws: Hidden Gems” or Special/Timed Research Tasks such as “New Pokemon Snap Celebration – 4th part”.
The good news for trainers who don’t have Clamperl is that it will be more readily available during the Aquatic Paradise event, which runs from July 6-9, 2024. It will be an increased spawn during the event.
Can Clamperl be Shiny in Pokemon Go?
Yes, Clamperl can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this special variation was added to the game at the same time its regular version debuted.
While regular Clamperl has a blue shell and pink pearl, Shiny Clamperl rocks a golden pearl and a bright purple shell, so players will be able to spot it easily.
It’s worth noting that both Shiny Huntail and Shiny Gorebyss are also available, but because those Pokemon can only be obtained through the evolution process, in order to get their Shiny variations, trainers must catch and evolve some extra Shiny Clamperl.

As said above, in Pokemon Go, Huntail and Gorebyss can only be obtained through the evolution process.
To evolve Clamperl into either Huntail or Gorebyss, you must feed it 50 Candy. However, there’s no way to decide which evolution you’ll get, as the process is entirely random.
This differs from the mainline games, as Clamperl could evolve into either one depending on what item it was holding on to during a trade.
Unlike many other Pokemon including Eevee — not counting name tricks — and Rockruff, there’s no way to influence what Clamperl evolves into, so you’ll just have to keep evolving multiple Clamperl until you get both evolutions.
This could take you a while, especially as Clamperl is quite a rare spawn in Pokemon Go. Another method would be to find a player who has the evolution that you don’t have and trade with them.
