40. Toedscruel

The regional variant of Tentacruel, this land-loving take on the jellyfish Pokemon doesn’t have much in the way of Attack, but it does feature a hefty 120 Sp. Defense stat to help you wall some tough opponents.
Moreover, it also has the interesting Ability Mycelium Might, which allows Status moves to ignore any Abulity, but they must go last in the priority of battle. This means it can set up the move Spikes and have it hit even opponents with the ability Levitate that would normally be immune.

39. Tsareena

Another mono Grass-type Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Sun & Moon, Tsareena outshines its counterpart Lurantis thanks to a better stat spread and a fantastic Ability. Tsareena has a base 120 Attack stat to play with, and the Ability Queenly Majesty ignores priority moves.
With some pretty impressive defensive stats to back up the Attack, Tsareena can cause some real problems, especially with some great STAB moves in its arsenal like Power Whip.

38. Lurantis

With a cool design based on a praying mantis, it’d be nice if Lurantis was a better Pokemon. While it does have a great 105 Attack stat, and the amazing ability Contrary which turns any stat decrease into an increase, most players would pick Serperior instead.
At least Lurantis has access to the move Superpower, which would normally lower Attack and Defense by one stage, but with Contrary instead sets Lurantis to be a potential sweeper if it can stay in the battle long enough.

37. Abomasnow

Abomasnow is a fun Pokemon with a great type combination, and it also summons snow upon entering the battle thanks to its ability Snow Warning.
It just doesn’t have the offensive chops to actually make use of this, however, and there are better Grass-type Pokemon and much better Ice-type Pokemon, depending on how you want to use it.

36. Shiftry

While Shiftry isn’t about to take the competitive scene by storm, it has a cool design and a few neat features to help it stand out. Grass and Dark is a fun combination, and Shiftry also has the Ability Wind Rider, which increases Shiftry’s attack when hit by Wind-based moves like Tailwind.
While 100 Attack is a good starting point, its defensive capabilities let it down, and while it has access to Mega Drain, you’ll want to focus on Physical Attack instead of Special. Still, Trailblaze does help to improve its Speed.

35. Arboliva

Arboliva, the olive Pokemon, is another Pocket Monster with huge potential let down by a few key factors. It does have an impressive 125 Sp. Attack stat which it can pair with great moves like Leaf Storm and Alluring Voice.
Meanwhile, its Ability Seed Sower enables Grassy Terrain whenever an opponent hits Arboliva, giving it a much-needed boost. Sadly, a Speed stat of 39 really lets it down and gets in the way of Arboliva reaching its potential.

34. Dhelmise

Poor Dhelmise isn’t available in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, but it’s still a very strong pick with a couple of standout features. It has a humongous 131 Attack and the Ability Steelworker multiplies attack by 1.5x when using a Steel-type move.
Pair this with its move Anchor Shot – a Steel-type move that prevents switching out – as well as an immunity to Normal and Fighting-type moves, and while Dhelmise may not have much in the way of Speed, it can take opponents by surprise.

33. Sawsbuck

Introduced in Pokemon Black and White, both Deerling and Sawsbuck make use of those games’ season system, changing their appearance depending on the time of the year.
While it may look unassuming, it has a respectable stat spread with 100 Attack, and the Ability Serene Grace doubles the secondary effects of moves, meaning moves like Headbutt go from a 30% chance of making the opponent flinch, to a 60% chance.

32. Scovillain

An interesting design and great potential type combination is somewhat wasted with Scovillain, as despite staking a claim in competitive thanks to its niche Grass/Fire combo, it doesn’t have the stats to effectively use these types.
Still, it’s not hopeless, as having 108 Attack and Sp. Attack lends it some versatility and a pretty standard 75 Speed can be doubled thanks to the Ability of Chlorophyll. So, set up a Sunny Day, get your Speed going, and Solar Beam/Flamethrower to your heart’s content.

31. Ludicolo

A fun Pokemon with one of the rarer type combinations, Ludicolo even makes an appearance in the Detective Pikachu movie. While its stats leave a bit to be desired, it does have the ability Swift Swim which doubles Speed in rain.
With this Ludicolo can be a good choice in Double Battles, alongside access to STAB on moves like Hydro Pump and Giga Drain. With its resistance to Water, this makes Ludicolo a good counter to other bulky Water-type Pokemon.

30. Carnivine

It’s been a while since Carnivine has been seen in the competitive scene, only recently turning up in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, though it is still a great choice in Pokemon Go.

29. Trevenant

28. Tropius

Poor Tropius, this Flying-type dinosaur is in desperate need of an evolution (or at least a regional variant), because despite its amazing design and unique typing, it just doesn’t have the stats to compete with some bigger threats.
There is hope for Tropius yet, though, as it does have a respectable HP stat and some great ways to increase its stats with a few different abilities: namely Chlorophyll, Solar Power, and Harvest. So be sure to set up SunnyDay first.

27. Vileplume

One of the original batch, Vileplume has come a long way since Pokemon Red and Blue. This powerful pollen-peddler has always had an impressive Sp. Attack of 110, which is well placed to take advantage of plenty of great Grass-type moves.
Vileplume can also cause lots of problems in matches with its Ability Effect Spore, which has a 30% chance of inflicting a status effect on the opponent any time they make contact.

26. Alolan Exeggutor

A fresh take on an old classic, the regions of Alola and its tropical weather allowed Exeggutor to grow to new heights, literally. The long-necked version gains the Dragon type and a little more Attack.
Exeguttor can also learn Flamethrower, so alongside some strong STAB capabilities with moves like Draco meteor and Leaf Storm, this cracking Grass-type can be a threat to countless types of Pocket Monsters on the battlefield.

25. Torterra

A hard-hitting Pokemon that might surprise some, Torterra uses its Ground-type to gain an immunity to Electric moves, which works great alongside its great defensive stats.
Torterra also has the Hidden Ability Shell Armor, which means it cannot be hit with a Critical Hit. While not Earth-shattering, this does help to take some of the luck out of your matches.

24. Rotom – Mow Form

One of the most unusual type combinations in the game, Rotom Mow uses its rare Electric/Grass-type combination, alongside an immunity to Ground-type moves, to cause a problem for a lot of different opponents.
It also has access to both Volt Switch and Will-O-Wisp, meaning Rotom Mow can be a great way to get a free burn in within the first round, only to then get a free swap for a more powerful Pokemon to take advantage of the status effect.

23. Gogoat

Sadly, not quite the GOAT, Gogoat is still an impressive Grass-type Pokemon thanks to a few key factors. Firstly, it has a fantastic HP stat to help wall some big threats, and it also has access to the ability Sap Sipper, giving it immunity to Grass-type moves.
Put this together with a strong STAB move like Horn Leech, which recovers 50% of the damage dealt, and Gogoat can be really tough to take down if you aren’t prepared.

22. Tangrowth

Years after Tangela first appeared in Pokemon Red & Blue, Pokemon Diamond & Pearl gave it an evolution in the form of Tangrowth, an incredibly bulky creature with huge defensive capabilities.
Alongside it’s great HP and Defense, it also has access to Regenerator, a Hidden Ability that heals 1/3rd of the Pokemon’s health when switching out. This makes Tangrowth great for inflicting status effects with Stun Spore and then getting out of the fray until later.

21. Leafeon

One of the many Eevee evolutions, Leafeon is a pure Grass-type Pokemon that is as tough as it is cute. It has an impressive 130 Defense stat, though sadly Grass isn’t the best defensive typing thanks to its lack of immunities.
Still, this Eeveelution can also make use of a tough 110 Attack, 95 Speed, and the ability of Chlorophyll which allows it to double its Speed in Sunlight. Don’t count this one out.

20. Sceptile

Sceptile is a Pokemon screaming out for a secondary type, and luckily it gains this when it transforms into Mega Sceptile, becoming Grass/Dragon. Hopefully, Mega Sceptile returns in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

Even with just a single type, Sceptile is a respectable threat thanks to its fantastic Speed stat and the ability to improve it even further with its Hidden ability Unburden. Get a Swords Dance under your belt and Sceptile just might be unstoppable.

19. Roserade

Sadly Roserade isn’t available in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, so hopefully we see it return to mainline games in the future. Still, in previous gens, Roserade is a great way to set up Spikes, a similar stage hazard to Stealth Rock.
With a great Sp. Attack stat, some amazing STAB moves like Sludge Bomb or Leaf Storm, and a respectable Speed, Roserade can cause real problems for Fairy-type Pokemon and Water-based walls like Milotic.

18. Breloom

While this strange-looking Pokemon is frail in many ways, a huge 130 Attack stat is not to be sniffed at and helps Breloom to break through huge Water-type defensive walls like Dodonzo.
Breloom also has access to the Ability Technician, which powers up moves with a low Attack. Couple that with moves like Mach Punch to gain priority, and Bullet Seed for some heavy STAB damage, and Breloom is a real threat.

17. Celebi

Beloved by many, Celebi is the mythical Pokemon for Pokemon Gold & Silver, bookending the Johto Pokedex much the same way Mew did for Kanto back in the originals.
Its Psychic typing gives it access to some great offensive STAB moves, both in Physical and Special Attack, meanwhile, Natural Cure heals status effects like Burn whenever Celebi switches out. A solid choice.

16. Decidueye

A firm favorite among fans, and even a fighter in Pokken Tournament DX, Decidueye is a fantastic Grass-type starter given even more versatility with great moves and an amazing Hidden Ability.
In Scarlet & Violet Decidueye has access to the Ability Long Reach, meaning it doesn’t make contact with targets, avoiding getting burned by Pokemon with Flame Body, or other abilities like Iron Barb.

Hisuian Decidueye*

Hisuian Decidueye doesn’t look wildly different from its Alolan counterpart, but in gaining a Fighting type, it loses the immunity to Normal and Fighting that the Ghost type originally had.
It’s still a great pick, however, especially thanks to a higher Attack stat and its Hidden Ability Scrappy, which – poetically – lets Hisuian Decidueye hit Ghost-type Pokemon even with Normal and Fighting-type moves.

15. Zarude

Zarude is the mythical Pokemon representing the Galar region and even gets a starring role in Pokemon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. With an interesting mixture of Dark and Grass, sadly Zarude gains a few additional weaknesses.
However, Zarude still has a great Attack stat at 120 with access to Swords Dance, and some great STAB moves like Power Whip, or even Trailblaze to bolster Zarude’s great Speed.

14. Ferrothorn

Sadly the powerful Ferrothorn isn’t available in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, so hopefully we see it return when we play Pokemon Legends Z-A. For now, it’s still a great choice for Pokemon Go’s Great Battle League.
The secondary Steel type gives Ferrothorn an immunity to Poison, which works well alongside a huge 131 Defense and 116 Sp. Defense. While its Speed is frankly abysmal, it’s well set up to take advantage of Trick Room and Iron Barbs to slowly whittle away the opponent’s HP.

13. Venusaur

Back to where it all began, the time has been kind to Venusaur, as its considerable bulk was only helped with the addition of Poison as a secondary type, making it a great threat against Fairy-type Pokemon.
It also has access to the hidden ability Chlorophyll which doubles Speed in sunshine, so coupled with a couple of moves like Growth and Weather Ball, Venusaur can be an imposing threat in the right conditions.

12. Whimsicott

11. Sinistcha

Found in the faraway land of Kitikami, Sinistcha is a convergent species of Sinistea, with the ghost instead inhabiting the spirit of a cup of matcha.
Sinistcha is a Grass/Ghost that can use the ability Heatproof to dampen Fire-type attacks, in tandem with an impressive 106 Defense stat.
Then, hit them with a Matcha Gotcha, a powerful Grass-type move that not only heals the user but has a 20% chance of burning the opponent. That’s some scalding hot tea.

Chesnaught hails from the land known as Kalos, which is set to be revisited in the upcoming Pokemon Legends Z-A. A strong defensive type, Chesnaught also has access to Body Press which uses its Defense stat to calculate Attack, instead of its Attack.
The quill Pokemon Chesnaught also has access to the Ability Bulletproof, which gives it complete immunity to bullet-based moves, such as Rock Blast, Shadow Ball, Pyro Ball, Bullet Seed, and even more.

9. Hydrapple

After the adorable Applin got a surprise evolution – Dipplin – in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet The Teal Mask, it was even more surprising to see Dipplin become the powerful Pokemon Hydrapple in the subsequent DLC.
With a powerful signature move in the form of Fickle Beam, as well as access to the powerful Ability Regenerator to help it regain some health when switching out, Hydrapple is a fantastic new addition to the Pokemon pantheon.

8. Amoonguss

The unassuming mushroom Pokemon Amoonguss has been a mainstay in the competitive landscape recently, even recently helping Wolfey Glick land victory in the Orlando Regionals.
That additional Poison typing really helps Amoonguss cause problems for Fairy-type Pokemon, meanwhile, it’s a great defensive Pokemon with access to both Spore and Clear Smog to help break down opponent’s walls.

7. Iron Leaves

One of the new Paradox Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, Iron Leaves is a futuristic take on Virizion, and swaps out the Fighting type of that creature for Psychic instead.
Iron Leaves has one over on its predecessor thanks to that great typing, as well as STAB damage on the move Psyblade, a powerful prospect alongside a well-timed Swords Dance.

6. Meowscarada

Meowscarada is the fully-evolved form of one of the cutest Pokemon to ever exist – Sprigatito – which is one of the stars of the latest anime series Pokemon Horizons.
While Meoscarada might still be cute, it’s also dangerous, as it has access to the Hidden Ability Protean, which changes the Pokemon’s type to the same as the move it is using. So, it can use a move like Triple Axel and briefly gain the Ice-type for full STAB damage.

5. Serperior

The proud Pokemon Serperior debuted all the way back on the DS, and while it has been forgotten a little over the years, it’s another Pokemon that benefits from a fantastic ability.
In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Serperior has access to Contrary, an ability that swaps around stat decreases or increases. So, if Serperior uses Leaf Storm – a move that normally lowers its Attack stat by two stages – it instead receives a two-stage increase to its Sp. Attack. Yeah, it’s wild.

4. Rillaboom

A current firm favorite in the Pokemon VG meta, Rillaboom has had something or a resurgence since its Pokemon Sword and Shield debut. While it’s perfectly fine to begin with, a fantastic nature gives it the edge it needs.
Rillaboom’s hidden ability Grass Surge triggers Grassy Terrain upon it entering the field, meanwhile, its signature move Grassy Glide is given +1 priority when Grassy Terrain is active. Combined with a good EV spread that focuses on Speed and Attack, and Rillaboom is ready to rock.

3. Shaymin – Sky Form

While there is nothing wrong with the adorable Hedgehog form of regular Shaymin, the Grass/Flying-type Shaymin-Sky is much more competitively viable, thanks to a better stat spread and an interesting Ability.
Shaymin-Sky has access to Serene Grace, an ability that increases the likelihood of a move’s secondary effect. So, a move like Seed Flare goes from having a 40% chance to lower the opponent’s Special Defense, to an 80% chance.
Combine that with 127 Speed and 120 Sp. Attack, and you have a small but mighty Pokemon that is not to be underestimated.

2. Kartana

Almost the dictionary definition of a glass cannon, the diminutive Ultra Beast known as Kartana boasts one of the most impressive Attack stats in the entire series, at a whopping 181.
The dual Grass and Steel-type pairing also get rid of some key weaknesses for the Pokemon, only leaving Kartana vulnerable to Fighting or Fire-type Pokemon, though the latter is 4x as effective, so avoid a Charizard if you can.
The reason this creature is second on the list is because of the sadly abysmal Special Defense stat, sat at 31. Yes, it also has 131 Defense and a fairly impressive 109 Speed, but one single Flamethrower can send this Pokemon packing, no matter how strong it is.

1. Ogerpon – Teal Mask

Possibly the most recent addition to this entire list, Ogerpon takes the top spot thanks to some frankly wild stats alongside its versatility. The mischievous mythical Pokemon is already powerful in its base form, but it can also equip one of three masks to gain an additional type.
The Wellspring Mask grants Ogerpon an additional Water type, while the Hearthflame Mask adds Fire, and the Cornerstone Mask adds Rock. Any of these additional types have their own advantages, but the Hearthflame seems to be getting most of the competitive play at the moment.
