One of Overwatch 2’s top developers has confirmed that changes to Orisa and Mauga are slated for future patches, in another shake-up to the tank meta.
Playing tank in Overwatch 2 recently has revolved almost entirely around Mauga and his capabilities. Despite fears he would be undertuned on release, the latest hero added to the game immediately cemented himself as king of the meta, thanks to his great utility, consistent damage, and powerful sustain.
However, the most recent slate of nerfs brought him down a few pegs, with considerable nerfs to his armor, ammo, ultimate, healing, and overhealth. He’s a lot more manageable now, especially when factoring in a round of Ana nerfs that also dropped that same patch.
Overwatch 2 leader hero designer reveals future Mauga changes
On Twitter, Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson posted some conclusions after the most recent patch, saying that 2.8.1 was “overall a healthy patch” and that “big shakeups” were on the way in Season 9.

Speaking specifically about tanks, Dawson stated that there was “good diversity” in the heroes being picked, although Ball was still struggling in higher ranks.
He also said: “Mauga is still viable at most ranks but falling more at higher rank thresholds (he was on the downswing already as players began to play around him more effectively).”
For future Mauga changes, Dawson proposed that his power would be shifted towards aggression. Orisa is apparently also slated for some power shifting too.
