Overwatch fans question play of the game changes

Overwatch players on Reddit are asking about the status of an improved Play of the Game system mentioned by Developers back in 2016.

Possible changes to Overwatch’s infamous Play of the Game system were mentioned by Overwatch’s lead hero designer Geoff Goodman in an interview with Kotaku all the way back in November of 2016.

In the interview, Goodman mentions that the Overwatch team is working on what they called “Play of the Game 2.0”, which he said would basically give more credit to players involved in the play.

He used the example of a Genji using Dragonblade on a group of enemies after a Zarya ultimate, currently the Genji would get Play of the Game, but under the new system, Goodman said both players would be recognized.

The post to the Overwatch subreddit by user rubenburgt asks what happened to the new Play of the Game system, because it hasn’t been mentioned or heard of since the Kotaku interview.

Some users responded in the comments saying it was probably on Blizzard’s to-do list, but most likely pretty far down.

Others thought that the recent introduction of the new Overwatch World cup viewer, could be setting the stage for an overhaul of the Play of the Game system.

Blizzard hasn’t responded to the post, but Overwatch Developers have mentioned “special stuff” coming in 2019, which could include an overhaul to the system.

Many commenters said they would be happy to see a new PotG system, but would prefer Blizzard focus on other issues, like hero balance, that the community has been discussing recently.
