Jeff Kaplan explains how much of Overwatch 2 will be PvE

Overwatch 2 is set to deliver a new PvE experience to Blizzard’s hallmark FPS title, as well as fresh updates to PvP, but some players are concerned about whether the new story mode will overshadow the original.

Overwatch 2 has been hyped as the FPS’ saving grace, with an all-new story mode, a fresh graphics update, and heaps of gameplay changes.

For players interested in a more complete experience, it should deliver on a lot of the story principles Blizzard has been itching to build. However, there’s been concerns raised about whether the core PvP game has been neglected as a result.

Overwatch 2 is going to be jam-packed with features for all players.

Answering community questions on the forums on February 3, Jeff Kaplan described just what players should expect from the Overwatch expansion.

“For PvE we added a full story arc told through story missions,” he explained, and added it was a multiplayer experience. “Even though it’s a linear story I am reluctant to call it a campaign because it’s co-op, not single player.

“We’ll also have Hero Missions, which are highly replayable PvE backed by a progression system. The closest analogy is Adventure mode in Diablo 3 or World Quests in WoW — not a great analogy but indicative of the level of replay we were hoping for.

Lucio in Overwatch 2 Story ModeBlizzard Entertainment
Overwatch 2’s story mode was first revealed at BlizzCon 2019 with a demo story centered around Lucio.

While there’s a lot of PvE content being shipped, the PvP side isn’t being totally neglected, with an all-new competitive game mode and new heroes on the way.

“For PvP, we’re adding a completely new pool of PvP maps including a new game mode called Push. For both modes, new heroes will be added.”

However, when it comes to adding up percentages, it’s hard to tell. Blizzard haven’t confirmed how long the PvE campaign will be yet, and not all the features of the expansion have been revealed yet.

Push is one of the new additions to the Overwatch PvP experience.

There’s a chance things could change between now and the release of Overwatch 2, which has been rumored to be at the end of 2020.

For now, there seems to be a good balance of content between the new PvE side of the game and PvP. Players who only care about the competitive experience won’t need to invest into the expansion, but if you enjoy a good story mode, Overwatch 2’s is shaping up to be great.
