While often not as popular as the flashier Damage role, tanking is nevertheless a crucial aspect of success in Overwatch.

A tank’s role is often largely both defensive and reactive, with the main function of the position being to keep the rest of the team alive so they can focus on eliminating the enemies and capturing the objectives.

That doesn’t mean tanks can’t make proactive, game-changing plays themselves, however, and for aspiring tank players Overwatch League team LA Gladiators have released a video explaining how to do just that on Eichenwalde.

The video runs through a series of four tactics, each for a different tank hero, focused on playing around some of the key locations that determine success or failure on the map.

Blizzard EntertainmentThe Eichenwalde bridge is a notoriously tough choke point to break through.

The first details a tactic with Wrecking Ball to help attacking teams break through the first major choke point on the map, the bridge that separates the attacking spawn area from the location of the first capture point.

Wrecking Ball can bypass this choke entirely by swinging around the outside of the map and over the wall, dropping down on defenders and causing a disruption that should allow the rest of the team to push in behind him.

The second tip covers the defending side of the choke, detailing how to make the most of the classic “halt-hook” combo with Orisa and Roadhog. For D.Va players, the video also covers how to shuffle an exploding mech off a ledge to catch enemies off guard.

Finally, the video also covers a sneaky charge tactic with Reinhardt on defense. If you can make it to the side of the attacking spawn room during the set-up time, you have the opportunity to get a pin as the doors open and players come out.

If you execute it properly, the distance to the edge of the map is perfect so that the enemy will be thrown to their death, but you’ll survive and be able to quickly fall back to your standard defensive position.

All four tactics offer a means of catching the enemies off guard, giving tank players the opportunity to more actively impact the game rather than just sitting back and defending their team.
