Taylor Swift released evermore as a folk companion piece to folklore, both released in 2020. A bonus track, ‘Right where you left me’ quickly emerged as an essential deep cut. Here are the lyrics explained.
Amid loneliness and personal growth, Taylor Swift dove headfirst into folk music during the early days of 2020. Where folklore had a fluttering, sunkissed quality, evermore felt considerably darker, more somber, finding the singer-songwriter probing deeper into the work.
While the original version of the album saw a late 2020 release, the deluxe edition dropped on January 7, 2021. Attached to the physical deluxe edition were two songs, including ‘Right where you left me.’ With its brittle edges and brooding tone, the song engages with the forlorn aspects of heartache.
It might be a mere bonus track on an already emotionally confronting album, but it carries just as much heft and importance as any deep cut possible could. Here are the lyrics explained.
What are the lyrics to ‘Right where you left me’?
‘Right where you left me’ served as a bonus track on the physical deluxe edition of the Taylor Swift album, along with ‘It’s time to go.’ The song contains only one complete verse, in addition to a bridge and several iterations of the pre-chorus and chorus.
Here are the complete lyrics.

[Verse]
Friends break up, friends get marriedStrangers get born, strangers get buriedTrends change, rumors fly through new skiesBut I’m right where you left meMatches burn after the otherPages turn and stick to each otherWages earned and lessons learnedBut I, I’m right where you left me
[Pre-Chorus]Help, I’m still at the restaurantStill sitting in a corner I hauntCross-legged in the dim lightThey say, “What a sad sight,” II swear you could hear a hair pin dropRight when I felt the moment stopGlass shattered on the white clothEverybody moved on, I, I stayed thereDust collected on my pinned-up hairThey expected me to find somewhereSome perspective, but I sat and stared right where
[Chorus]You left me, you left me no, oh, you left me noYou left me no choice but to stay here foreverYou left me, you left me no, oh, you left me noYou left me no choice but to stay here forever
[Bridge]Did you ever hear about the girl who got frozen?Time went on for everybody else, she won’t know itShe’s still twenty-three inside her fantasyHow it was supposed to beDid you hear about the girl who lives in delusion?Breakups happen every day, you don’t have to lose itShe’s still twenty-three inside her fantasyAnd you’re sitting in front of me
[Pre-Chorus]At the restaurantWhen I was still the one you wantCross-legged in the dim lightEverything was just right, II could feel the mascara runYou told me that you met someoneGlass shattered on the white clothEverybody moved onHelp, I’m still at the restaurantStill sitting in a corner I hauntCross-legged in the dim lightThey say, “What a sad sight,” I, I stayed thereDust collected on my pinned-up hairI’m sure that you got a wife out thereKids and Christmas, but I’m unaware ’cause I’m right whereI cause no harm, mind my businessIf our love died young, I can’t bear witness, and it’s been so longIf you ever think you got it wrong, I’m right where
[Chorus]You left me, you left me no, oh, you left me noYou left me no choice but to stay here foreverYou left me, you left me no, oh, you left me noYou left me no choice but to stay here forever
Who wrote and produced ‘Right where you left me’?
‘Right where you left me’ was written by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner, who produced the song. According to Dessner, the song was one of the last written for evermore.
One day, Dessner entered the studio where engineer Jon Low was busy mixing other songs. “I came in, and he’s in the middle of mixing and I was like, ‘There are two more songs.’ And he looked at me like, ‘…We’re not gonna make it.’” Dessner said. “Because it does take a lot of time to work out how to finish them. She sang those remotely.”
Dessner had composed a bit of a track before a trip to see Justin Vernon, another songwriter. “Taylor had heard that and wrote this amazing song to it,” he continued. “That is a little bit how she works — she writes a lot of songs, and then at the very end she sometimes writes one or two more, and they often are important ones.”
What is Taylor Swift’s ‘Right where you left me’ about?
‘Right where you left me’ depicts the tragedy of heartbreak, following a character who becomes so beholden to the pain that they can’t forge a new future.
The bonus track is specifically about “a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time,” shared Taylor Swift on Twitter/X. While the singer-songwriter hasn’t delved further into the song’s lyrical and emotional underpinnings, she doesn’t necessarily need to. Her vocal performance is potent enough to get the theme across in colorful shades.
