While Magic: The Gathering’s Modern Horizons 3 set may have been built with the Modern format in mind, there are plenty of incredible new additions to Commander too.
From pre-con Commanders to overpowered card drawing Creatures, Modern Horizons 3 has a whole host of options to build a deck around. We’ve collected together the strongest picks in the whole set, not only do you have the best options at your fingertips, but you’ll know just what you’ve gotten into if one of these shows up at your next Commander night.
Best Commanders in MTG’s Modern Horizons 3 set:
#1: Nadu, Winged Wisdom
This brand-new Simic Commander may not look as intimidating as some of Modern Horizons 3’s other Creatures at a glance. However, what quickly becomes apparent is that Nadu packs some of the best draw power ever printed on a Commander of any color.
By relaxing the ‘only once per turn’ limitation to ‘twice per turn’ for the first time, MTG’s designers have created a truly impressive value engine. Nadu can restock your hand easily, but with enough Creatures on the field, this card can very easily churn through your deck and build up a huge pool of mana within a small handful of turns.
Nadu’s draw power is so impressive that the card is already seeing play alongside Thassa’s Oracle and other draw-based win-cons. While easy combo kills like this might be frowned upon in casual formats like Commander, Nadu is powerful enough to be run in cEDH and any other viable format with ease.
#2: Ulamog, the Defiler
Modern Horizons 3 is packed to the gills with formidable new Eldrazi Creatures. This archetype is a fan-favorite that had mostly lacked support in recent years, outside of a Commander Masters pre-con.
Many Eldrazi have been hotly-anticipated by MTG players since Modern Horizons 3’s early leaks and spoiler season, but this updated Ulamog is easily the best Commander of the lot.
Ulamog’s initial casting effect wipes out half of a target opponent’s library and is likely to stick around on the field thanks to a potent Ward effect. Once Ulamog has entered the field, it can truly devastate an opponent’s whole board thanks to the best Annihilation effect ever printed on an Eldrazi card.
As a drawback, Ulamog does not synergize as well with some of the set’s new Eldrazi support as other Eldrazi Commanders. However, the sheer power of this card cannot be denied, and having easy, reliable access to it via the Command zone places in near the peak of Modern Horizons 3’s options.
#3: The Necrobloom
Magic: The Gathering has amassed a truly impressive number of ways to generate and double up on Creature tokens, especially through Green Enchantments and white cards like Ojer Taq, Deepest Civilisation.
By running Abzan colors, The Necrbloom adds some of MTG’s best token support to a Creature type that has incredible board-swarming potential: Zombies.
This card is not only a reliable token producer, it has a truly impressive output by relying on Landfall for its triggered effects. Modern Horizons 3 is packing a ton of Landfall support, meaning that this Commander can push the game’s tempo in its controller’s favor right away.
The Necrobloom combines several of Magic’s most popular strategies together into a Commander that will build up huge boards and overrun any number of opponents with ease.

#4: Eladamri, Korvecdal
Green mana has been seeing a resurgence in several MTG formats recently, thanks to a concentrated effort by Wizards. Commander is no different, and having a mono-green Commander with this much reliable power is a real boon for the color.
Mono-green does one thing better than all of Magic’s other solo colors, and that’s pump out powerful Creatures. Eladamri fits perfectly into this strategy, being a low mana-value Creature that has little combat acumen on its own, but is a crucial player in getting stronger Creatures onto the field.
Casting from the top of the Library effectively adds to your hand, and by tapping two Creatures of any power level and paying a single green mana, Eladamri can put a potentially huge threat onto the field without paying its regular casting cost.
Eladamri is a face that classic MTG players will know well, but the character’s return makes a strong impression on this card alone.
#5: Ulalek, Fused Atrocity
Rounding out the list of best MH3 Commanders, Ulalek can be found in both the main set and heading up the Eldrazi Incursion pre-con. Ulalek is a tricky Commander with a five-color identity, allowing players to pack all of the set’s new Eldrazi support into a single set.
While Ulalek may lack the standalone power of fellow Edlrazi Ulamog, this card is an excellent build-around that can help you make the best of your other Eldrazi spells and abilities.
By copying your spells on the stack, Activated effects, and Triggered effects, Ulalek can double up on your entire board’s potential. It’s worth building toward this Commander as quickly as possible, as even a turn or two active on the board can significantly push the advantage in your favor and make it hard for opponents to catch up.
Often, Commander decks rely too heavily on the Commander as a linchpin of the entire strategy. While Ulalek certainly helps to push a deck into overdrive, it can also be used as a strong foundation to build a deck around, which can function just fine when this card remains off the field.

We’ve also covered why Slivers are the next Creature type that deserve the level of support Eldrazi got in MH3.
Modern Horizons 3 was very nearly even more impactful thanks to discussions around breaking the Reserve List. For players who are looking for an MTG product outside of MH3, this summer Secret Lair has incredible art by a legendary fantasy artist.
