New MTG Ixalan card totally breaks token decks

MTG The Lost Caverns of Ixalan brings an overwhelmingly powerful new cycle of gods, with one among them providing a huge boost to creature tokens.

Among MTG’s many viable deckbuilding strategies, ‘going wide’ is an all-time favorite. Creature-focused strategies can quickly build up a handful of powerful threats, but without some form of evasion, their attacks can be easily blocked. Going wide skirts around this problem, overwhelming your opponents with sheer numbers of small creatures and tokens.

Now, a new Mythic Rare card in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan has the potential to drastically accelerate creature token production and lead to token decks storming away with the win.

Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation triples creature tokens

Ojer Axonil Ixalan God card

Part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation is a Legendary God creature that is swiftly setting itself apart as one of the most sought-after cards in the deck. Ojer Taq’s ability reads ‘If one or more creature tokens would be created under your control, three times that many of those tokens are created instead.’ MTG Token decks can churn out a large, reliable supply of small creatures, and this card can create a veritable horde in a short space of time.

The only catch here is that Ojer Taq has less inherent protection than some of its MTG white mana token-multiplying brethren. Mondrak, Glory Dominus has a similar effect and has seen regular play since its release in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, thanks in no small part to the ease with which it can be granted Indestructible.

Anointed Procession is another token-doubling staple in white, regularly used due to its low cost and the comparative rarity of enchantment removal. Both it and Mondrak come in at a respectable four mana, making them both more reliable early-game value engines than Ojer Taq. But, crucially, each of these cards’ abilities stack, and together they could make a truly terrifying token engine.

Using Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation

With its prohibitive mana cost and lack of removal protection, Ojer Taq does not fill quite the same role as others of its ilk. Given that it is likely to become a target the moment it hits the field, this card is best suited to facilitating a turn or two’s worth of explosive plays. If its ability has a chance to go off, Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation can build you a game-winning board almost immediately.
