Universes Beyond: Fallout is adapting Fallout characters both beloved and hated for MTG, and now it’s one particular Fallout 4 companion’s time to shine.

MTG’s Universes Beyond: Fallout is bringing the games’ best qualities to life, drawing on characters and events from all throughout the franchise.

The designers in charge of this set clearly have a deep love of Fallout. Now, that love is being shown through a knowing reference to one of the series’ most infamous companions.

How Preston Garvey brings settlements to MTG

Preston is set to debut in MTG Universes Beyond: Fallout’s Scrappy Survivors deck. With several other Fallout decks focusing on potentially antagonistic factions, Scrappy Survivors is rounding up companions and all the allies you could want on your journey into the wasteland.

While Garvey may not always be the most desirable companion in Fallout 4, his MTG appearance is likely to fare much better. At the beginning of each of your combats, Preston creates a green Settlement enchantment and attaches it to a land you control. The land can then be tapped for one mana of any color.

In converting lands into settlements, Preston makes himself of real use for the first time. Not only is this ability an excellent mana fixer, but when Preston attacks, you may untap every enchanted permanent you own, giving you a huge boost in mana production.

Even fans who grew sick of Preston Garvey in Fallout 4 will likely find a use for him when MTG’s Universes Beyond: Fallout set launches on March 8

Who is Preston Garvey in Fallout?

Preston Garvey is perhaps best known among the Fallout fanbase for his rather overzealous approach to sidequests.

Garvey’s role within the Minutemen in Fallout 4 has him tasked the player with aiding settlements that are in danger. While this is a seemingly reasonable request at first – and justified by the character’s backstory – Preston’s requests can quickly become incessant.

This sheer frequency with which Preston will chime in about Settlements in need of help while playing through Fallout 4 has made him one of the game’s most infamous NPCs.

It seems as though the MTG designers couldn’t resist poking a little fun at Preston and his obsessive nature, and his appearance in MTG Universes Beyond: Fallout is directly tied to settlements too.
