MTG Omenpaths explained

MTG Karlov Manor OmenpathsWOTC

The biggest focus of this new wave of MTG’s story – following the conclusion of the Phyrexian War arc – has been the Omenpaths. These unpredictable portals have allowed characters to cross from plane to plane without the use of a Planeswalker’s spark.

As of yet, the Omenpath’s openings and destinations have seemed random. However, this story installment proves that there is a pattern to them, however confusing. Niv-Mizzet, previous Izzet guild leader and current living guildpact of Ravnica, has set his sights on mapping and controlling the Omenpaths. Niv’s aim is to master this new form of multiplanar travel and situate Ravnica at the center of it all, a hub between the planes.

Whether this new development is pushing Niv-Mizzet into a similar antagonistic role to fellow elder dragon and God-Pharaoh Nicol Bolas remains to be seen. Niv may wish for more power and prominence for his home plane, or perhaps simply more followers of his brilliant mind, but placing Ravnica as the capital of the multiverse is at least less destructive in the short term than Bolas’ plans for ascension.

While this story development is somewhat surprising, it. With the remnants of a previous interplanar civilization – the Fomori – being discovered in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and the Omenpaths’ role in MTG’s future becoming clearer, it seems that the story’s new direction is becoming clearer with each new set.
