MTG answers fans’ prayers by bringing back classic ability for 2024

Wither is a beloved Magic: The Gathering ability that has been out of the spotlight for far too long.

MTG’s Murders at Karlov Manor has brought several new and exciting abilities to the game, from Disguise to Suspect. Alongside these new mechanics, Murders at Karlov Manor is seeing the return of Wither, a beloved MTG ability that fans have been clamoring for the return of for some time.

Last seen in an MTG set in 2008, Wither’s long absence from the game has clearly not made it drop off fans’ radars. With fans calling for the ability to be reinstated, Wizards has obliged in Murders at Karlov Manor.

As part of the reveals for the Murders at Karlov Manor set, Wizards dropped the new creature Massacre Girl, Known Killer.

Usually, you would expect discussion around the card to center on the return of Massacre Girl herself, a long-running figure in sets taking place on Ravnica. While fans are no doubt happy to see Massacre Girl return, the top-rated comment following the reveal by Reddit commenter Kyleometers was simply:

“Holy sh*t wither.”

Wither coming back to Magic will clearly make a lot of fans hungry for the ability’s return happy. In fact, the reveal of this ability coming back could hardly have come at a better time.

At the start of the year, MTG Principal Designer Gavin Verhey took to Twitter to ask fans which MTG abilities they’d like to see make a return in 2024.

In a Reddit thread discussing Verhey’s question, commenter the thebaron420 laid claim to the top-rated comment:

“Wither deserves a return.”

With many fans backing the sentiment, thebaron420 and others will likely be overjoyed that their hopes were all set to come true just two weeks after Verhey posed his question.
