How to update your League of Legends profile to a Riot Account

Riot Games are moving League of Legends players from game and region-specific accounts to a ‘Riot Account’ that will be used for all of their games.

Riot announced as part of their 10-year anniversary celebration for League of Legends that they are working on a variety of new games, the first of which will be LoL-based card game Legends of Runeterra.

As Riot look towards expanding their offering, they’re also transferring the accounts of existing League of Legends players into global Riot Accounts that will allow players to log into all of their games and servers with a single identity.

Legends of Runeterra is one of several new titles Riot are currently working on.

While League of Legends accounts will still work for the game until January 22, updating to a Riot Account will mean you don’t have to keep track of multiple log-in details for different regions, the Public Beta Environment (PBE), or any future Riot titles you decide to try out.

This does mean, however, that account names must be globally unique, with no duplicates across all servers and even the PBE. It is possible, therefore, that you may be required to change your username – as League of Legends commentator Froskurinn apparently discovered.

How to transfer to a Riot Account

The process for updating your League of Legends account to a Riot Account should be quite simple, with Riot setting up a dedicated page for the transfer.

For most players, simply going to the account update page and signing in should be sufficient to register your account as a Riot Account. If you need to change your username, you will be prompted to do so.

Players must ensure they’ve updated their League of Legends account prior to January 22, 2020 if they wish to keep playing without interruption, as after that point only Riot Accounts will be valid to log into their games.
