The magical world of Hogwarts Legacy allows players to tailor their wizarding experience with a variety of difficulty settings that affect everything from duels to quests, and more.
Whether facing adversaries in spellbinding battles or tackling the main quests, the difficulty you choose before diving into Hogwarts Legacy will significantly influence your gaming experience.
That being said, you might be curious as to how many difficulty settings the game offers and how they differentiate from each other. Here’s a full explanation of what each difficulty setting means, as well as which one you’re best off picking.
All difficulty settings explained
Hogwarts Legacy features a total of 4 difficulty settings with each one providing a slightly increased challenge.
- Story
- Easy
- Normal
- Hard
As its name says, Story mode focuses more on the narrative side of the game, giving players a very easy experience with minimal gameplay challenges during their journey.
If you’re a new or casual player who prefers delving into Hogwarts Legacy without any interruptions or difficulty spikes, the Story difficulty should be perfect for you.
The Easy difficulty is quite similar to the Story setting while providing a slight challenge. Both combat and puzzle difficulties are increased a bit, keeping things a little more interesting for players.
The Normal setting is the more balanced out of all the options, giving users an interesting and sometimes tough experience without making it impossible to progress or having them stuck in a quest because they can’t find the solution.

The Hard setting is the toughest difficulty in Hogwarts Legacy as you get to go through a brutal experience that doesn’t pull any punches.
How to change difficulty settings
Even though you pick a difficulty level at the beginning of your journey, you can change it at any moment by following these simple steps:
- Press the Start button to open up the Map Menu.
- Use RB (Xbox) to change tabs and go to the one that says ‘Settings‘.
- On the list that appears on the left, go for the fourth icon (a controller in front of a gear) to open the Gameplay Options.
- Press A on the Difficulty option to unfold all four available difficulties.
- Choose your desired level of difficulty and Press A. Then go back to the game.
You can also find the ‘Settings’ option by pausing the game and opening the gear icon on the bottom right side of the screen.
Best difficulty setting to use in Hogwarts Legacy
As always, the Normal difficulty is the best one, as it allows you to play the game as intended. It doesn’t make the game too hard while also avoiding a lot of handholding that other modes might have.
If you’re not used to playing video games but you’re a Harry Potter fan looking for a balanced experience, this should be your go-to mode.
