The GTA 6 controller layout has been revealed via gameplay leaks and fans are thrilled over new features coming to the series.

It’s been over ten years since the last Grand Theft Auto game was released and GTA VI has a lot of catching up to advance the series’ gameplay to new heights.

The 2022 gameplay leaks revealed quite a lot about the game before Rockstar officially unveiled GTA 6, giving players a sneak peek at Vice City, the new protagonists, and even controls.

As shown by users on X, there are a slew of new options available for on-foot gameplay in GTA 6 that separate it from GTA 5.

Of note, while tapping L3 will once again let you crouch, you can now hold L3 to go prone. This should come in handy during intense shootouts, hiding from cops, and even stealth missions.

Sticking with the thumbstick buttons, R3 will now let you switch weapon hands. It’s not clear yet what the point of this is, but it may apply more to aiming while driving.

Triangle/Y meanwhile, will be used for picking up items, so expect a lot more gameplay mechanics for non-weapons in the next GTA experience.

Notably absent is any form of function for R1. In GTA 5, this would let players snap to cover, but it seems like GTA 6 will be utilizing an auto-cover system.

It’s unlikely that Rockstar will leave R1 vacant, so it’ll be very interesting to see what sort of new feature the devs have in store.

Finally, square on PlayStation or X on Xbox, which was used to jump and dive in GTA 5, is also absent. Once again, this raises some eyebrows about what the developers have planned.

“HOLD TO GO PRONE?! Hell yea baby!” one exclaimed.

“Prone (crawl) is so much more useful than switching weapon hand … And the D-pad buttons that aren’t labeled yet should be peeking left and right around corner,” another chimed in.

Of course, anything could have changed since the leaks and Rockstar may have revamped the GTA 6 controls since then, but at least we have an idea of how the gameplay is being improved with VI ahead of the 2025 release.
