Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty trailers

While the trailer didn’t dive into any full mission showcases, we did get an insight into the game’s combat. Team Ninja is responsible for bringing us the Ninja Gaiden and Nioh franchises, which focus heavily on swordsmanship and fast-paced dueling.

This game seems to be taking a similar approach, albeit with an injection of fantasy and mythical beasts to defeat. Players can “overcome adversity through unique new strategies, including battle styles based on the “Five Phases.”

The game will also feature a character creator and something the dev has described as a “new morale system”, alongside online multiplayer.

Multiplayer works a lot like Nioh in that players will need to gather a certain item in order to summon allies into their game. In Wo Long, this is the Tiger Seal item that can be used to summon either an NPC ally or another player into the game world. Tiger Seals are scarce and should be used wisely.

What is the game about?

According to developers Team Ninja, the game will follow “a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms.” The game’s concept comes from Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa and Nioh producer Fumihiko Yasuda.

Wo Long is set in China during the era of the Three Kingdoms from 220 to 280 AD. The game is based on Luo Guanzhong’s 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. However, judging from the zombies and dragon spirits we’ve seen in the game, we imagine it’s going to be a very loose adaptation of that historical novel.

Fans of Dynasty Warriors may also recognize the time period, as like many of those games, Wo Long is set during the Yellow Turban Rebellion in ancient China. However, like Nioh, we’re likely to see a supernatural twist to the tale.

The game is reported to be around forty hours long, which is around how long each Nioh game was. A recent exclusive IGN video showed off some impressive gameplay that also had heavy Nioh vibes. It depicts a boss battle against Aoye, a giant bull creature from ancient Chinese mythology. In the video, the player dies multiple times, ensuring any concerns about Wo Long being too easy were unfounded.
