CD Projekt Red have announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a significant delay, until September 17 2020. The original release date was April 16, 2020.
Easily the most anticipated game of the year, CD Projekt’s first game away from the Witcher series hit critical mass after Keanu Reeves announced the initial release date of April 16 at E3.
Unfortunately, given the scope of the game, this date has been deemed unachievable by the Polish development company.

On January 16, CD Projekt Red posted on their Twitter account to say that the game is currently “complete and playable”, but there is still work to be done.

The news may not come as a surprise to longtime CD Projekt fans, who also delayed their critically acclaimed Witcher 3.
That game was actually delayed twice, initially set for holiday 2014, then February 2015, before eventually releasing in April 2015.

The studio has a reputation now for massive and lengthy games, packed with content, and hopefully, this delay will mean an improvement in all areas.
There is no doubt that players would rather a more finished and polished project, even if it means a delay. Fingers crossed that there will not be a second delay, like the Witcher 3.

Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, and is set in Night City – a vast and sprawling metropolis. It seems this is a major reason for the delay, as they explain:
“Night City is massive – full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing.”
They conclude that they want Cyberpunk 2077 to be “our crowning achievement of this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”
The news comes only a day after Square Enix announced they would be delaying another of the year’s most anticipated titles, the remake of Final Fantasy VII. This delay was only a month though, until April.
