After an auto-update that rolled out on Fortnite across all platforms early in the morning on January 1, a new image added to the game files may suggest solo gameplay is returning to the Fortnite Champion Series.

The Fortnite Champion Series, or FNCS, has cycled through a couple of different formats so far, with players earning thousands across trios and squads tournaments throughout previous seasons.

Now, though, it seems Fortnite may be returning to its roots with a season of FNCS solos, giving the best individual players a chance to shine in a competitive environment.

Bugha was crowned champion at the last major solo tournament – the Fortnite World Cup.

In a tweet posted by TrickFN, he’s quite clearly excited at the idea of a solo tournament – if the leaked image is to be believed.

He said: “A new auto-update just rolled out across all platforms and this PNG was added to the game files. Lets f**cking go.”

The PNG file is a simple one, that just says “Solos FNCS Week 1” with the date January 18-19 attached, just a couple of weeks before the expected launch of Chapter 2, Season 2.

Of course, this can’t be verified at the time of writing as there has been no official confirmation (or denial) from Epic Games themselves, but data miners will often find new content through the background game files.

Solo play has not been as heavily emphasized in recent months, with the last major solo tournament being at the 2019 Fortnite World Cup, which gave $3 million to winner Kyle ‘Bugha’ Giersdorf.

If the FNCS solo leak is to be believed, the pressure will be on Bugha to retain his solo champion title, but there will be thousands of players seeking to take that spot from him.
