FIFA 22 brought a huge host of tweaks, from a FUT Champions Weekend League restructure to Player Career getting a kickstart with new content, but there was still a lack of landmark changes.

So, that begs the question: Is FIFA 23 taking things in a new direction before the series is rebranded as EA SPORTS FC? Let’s take a look at everything so far.

Cross-play

EA SPORTS is adding full cross-platform play in FIFA 23. Notorious FIFA leaker Fut Sheriff claimed that: “Cross-play will be tested in FIFA 22. Probably won’t be on Ultimate Team, but is def coming in FIFA 23!”

This turned out to be the case as cross-play is finally being implemented, although it will only apply to 1v1 game modes. This hasn’t been to everyone’s taste, but it could only be the beginning for the feature going forward with the series.

Women’s Super League added

After years of stagnation, women’s representation in FIFA is set to be addressed as EA is adding England’s Barclays Women’s Super League and France’s Division 1 Arkema.

This will include 24 teams featuring the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, PSG, and more.

A women’s career mode hasn’t been outed yet, but like cross-play, this could be the start of a real overhaul for women’s football in FIFA.

Will the World Cup 2022 be in FIFA 23?

In the same announcement that revealed FIFA 23 will be the last game to feature FIFA branding, it was also confirmed that World Cup content is making a return.

Both the men’s and women’s World Cup will be featured in the game and will arrive as free updates at no extra cost.

The date has yet to be confirmed yet.

Hypermotion 2 Technology

EA has declared that they’ve upgraded to Hypermotion 2 Technology in FIFA 23, an even greater and more powerful version of what we saw in FIFA 22.

It’s providing “more animations than ever before” and it will receive a complete demonstration on July 27, 2022.

Will FIFA 23 have an Online Career Mode?

There have long been rumors of an Online Career Mode coming to FIFA, though it’s never materialized.

Around the time FIFA 22 launched, though, there was a glimmer of hope discovered in EA job listings.

On June 3, 2021, we reported that an Online Software Engineer posting had been advertised, which had some very interesting details in the job description.

It said: “As an Online Software Engineer, you will help build our networked play development team – whether that be in our online Career Mode, ultimate team, or core online systems and protocols.

“We are looking for engineers who enjoy prototyping and planning, adding amazing new features to an existing and beloved game, and improving existing code.”

That being said, it never came to fruition in FIFA 22 – potentially opening the door for the game after. Well, that very game is going to launch in 2022, so for Career Mode players, there may be good news coming.

In June 2022, it was suggested by FUTZone that EA was instead considering the prospect of releasing Online Career Mode as a standalone, free-to-play game. However, the leaker admitted that the chances of the project going forward were “slim.”

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team changes: Chemistry rework & position changes

Chemistry is a key part of the FUT formula, a constant puzzle for players to solve as they try and cram all of the very best players into a single starting XI. At the moment, Chemistry is achieved with players from the same nation or league, as well as managers with the right league and nation, but that could change in FIFA 23.

According to a leak from Weaver – FUT, FIFA 23 will allow players of any league or nationality to link together, working on a stars system. Every team will apparently be able to earn up to three stars, instead of the rating out of 100 used currently.

Sadly, there’s no more information to go off, so it’s unclear how the new system will handle stat boosts and what the rewards for better Chemistry will be.

Either way, there is no doubt that allowing players to fit stars from around the world into one team with no penalty would fundamentally change FUT 23 if the leak turns out to be true.

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team position change overhaul

Another fundamental part of Ultimate Team is also set to change in FIFA 23 as FUT Sheriff revealed that position changes will be reworked this time around.

He claimed that many players will have a primary position displayed on their cards, as well as a secondary position they are comfortable playing in. This will be based on roles they’ve taken up in real-life, such as Lionel Messi playing as a center forward and on the right wing.

To switch this secondary position FUT users can apply players with a generic position modifier card, which are earned through packs or bought on the Transfer Market as they are now.

If true, this should open the door for more drastic position changes, offering fans more options when building their team.
