YouTube-turned-MTV starlet Tana Mongeau has received backlash over her new perfume ‘TANA by Tana,’ with some fans upset over the shape of the bottle.

On January 25, the 21-year-old surprised her fanbase with the announcement that she’d created her own perfume, and even starred in a hilarious commercial to market the product.

While many rallied to order the new scent, some of her supporters were unhappy over the reveal because of one feature in particular – the bottle.

The Nevada-born star’s product is said to “captivate you with the flirty top notes of Tahitian vanilla and a head-turning base of vivid, sexy citrus” and “kiss your skin with it’s silky texture” – as detailed in an Instagram post by the internet personality.

Its glass container – a skull-shaped moment – holds 60 ml/2 fl oz, and the scent is priced on her website for $48 plus shipping and handling.

Some fans aren’t too pleased with the bottle though, with YouTuber Damon Fizzy finding a very similar product on a Chinese website for $0.30. “I can get this perfume bottle from China for 30 cents,” he said, and later followed it up with, “I have no issues with Tana and find her entertaining. I just thought she’d at least brand the product.”

He wasn’t the only one to point out the similarities though, others compared it to something that could be bought from US retail chain Hot Topic. The beauty brand ‘Blackheart’ has famously collaborated with the clothing store in the past to bring out rollerball perfumes in a glass skull.

“Why does Tana by Tana bottle look so cheap. Still gonna buy it [though],” one fan tweeted. I live for tana but sis is [about to] catch a lawsuit from hot topic,” another said, comparing the two side-by-side.

“All that money and the best Tana Mongeau could do was rip off a 5 dollar hot topic perfume bottle and call it “tana by tana”,” another person posted. “The creative bankruptcy of big name youtubers never ceases to amaze me.”

Despite the criticism of the bottle, other supporters were quick to rally behind the YouTuber and back up her new perfume product – including celebrities and other influencers.

“Get me some f**king tana by tana,” Logan Paul tweeted, clearly excited by his former sister-in-law’s venture.

Over on Instagram, congratulations for the MTV star poured in, with reality TV actor and singer Paris Hilton commenting, “Love you sis! So proud of you!”

Ex-husband Jake Paul also chimed in with “queen snapped” and rapper ModSun posted a simple “Proud of u.”

Friends and celebrities offered messages of congratulations for Tana.

When announcing the perfume, Tana revealed that she’d spent the best part of a year designing the scent and working on the bottle – meaning that maybe it’s more of a coincidence than meets the eye.

Glass skull bottles have been around for years (think Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head vodka) so it’s no surprise to many that it’s had an influence on future products.
