Long-term YouTube power couple Scotty Sire and Kristen McAtee have decided to call time on their five-year relationship, and explained why the “difficult” decision was the “right choice” in an emotional video to their fans.

Scotty and Kristen, both of whom boast huge YouTube fanbases after years on the platform, first met in 2015. They soon started dating, and spent the next half-decade producing plenty of videos and content together, and separately.

While things appeared to be the same as ever in their regular YouTube videos, to the extent the split has blindsided many of the pairs’ loyal followers, McAtee and Sire admitted there was “plenty their fans hadn’t seen” behind-the-scenes.

Scott and Kirsten “drifted apart” after five years

According to the pair, who laid out the separation in a six-minute video on February 6, things may have appeared perfect, but differences in where each wanted to go in their lives, as well as “a series of discussions” led to the final decision.

“You guys see us on the internet, having fun and having a good time, but you don’t see the arguments or the conversations we have off-camera because no one is going to film that. We drifted apart, it’s that simple,” Scotty said.

“I feel like we were in our relationship because it was comfortable, and obviously we love each other and… care about each other. We both agree that this is the right decision for us, it’s difficult, but we know it’s the right thing.”

“Like a Black Mirror episode”

McAtee, who had struggled to hold back tears at the start of the video, agreed with her now ex-boyfriend, adding that partners who stay together for as long as they had sometimes “drift apart” for a host of different reasons.

“The relationship was fine, but we just got to a point where, like you were saying, we’ve been together for so long, and it was comfortable, and I think it just got to a point where we grew apart, we weren’t together anymore,” she explained.

“So, that’s the end of our relationship, and thank you for watching,” she added, then caught herself. “That’s so f**king dark, that’s like a Black Mirror episode right there.”

McAtee asks fans not to take sides

While the two could have kept their split under the radar, both Sire and McAtee admitted it was “only fair” they update their fans open and honestly, especially considering they had “become known as ‘Scott and Kristen’ on the internet.”

“For the past week and a half or so, I haven’t wanted to post from my house, because people would still be thinking we were together, and we had tweets and fans asking us if we were broken up, so we knew that we had to tell you,” he said.

Finally, McAtee asked fans to avoid “choosing sides” in the fallout of the relationship coming to a close. Because the two were still friends, and had mutually decided it was time to call it quits, the YouTube stars hoped there would be “no bad blood.”

“There’s no reason to [take sides]. Nothing bad happened, I mean it from the bottom of my heart, I will have the craziest respect for [Scott] forever, he was my support system for five years. There’s no negativity, it’s not a side thing,” she said.

Because the two have broken up, they confirmed they may be taking some time away from video creation to sort things out, but added they would be back for the fans soon enough – potentially even still in each other’s videos.

Scotty and Kristen aren’t the only high-profile relationship to have come to a close recently, though they have been far less on-again, off-again than Turner ‘Tfue‘ Tenney and his partner Corinna Kopf, who called time again last week.

Tfue admitted he would “never” be getting into a relationship again after things didn’t work out for a second time with Corinna, though third time may be the charm for the Twitch star as their rocky relationship saga continues.
