Notable hip-hop artist Kanye West has just changed his name, much in the style of late music icon Prince – or, rather, ‘The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.’
Kanye revealed the change in a Tweet, which stated that he wishes to be known as ‘Ye’ henceforth.
“The being formally known as Kanye West,” he wrote. “I am YE.”
The change shouldn’t come as too great of a surprise, as the rapper has used the title as a nickname for years, and even named one of his albums after the term in June.
While the presentation of Ye’s name change was a very obvious nod to Prince’s similar change of title, no other reasons for the switch have yet been revealed. His Twitter handle has since reflected the change in kind, as well as his Instagram account, to boot.

This change comes just before the release of Ye’s newest album, ‘Yandhi,’ which is to be released alongside his appearance on late night show Saturday Night Live.
Ye’s presentation on SNL follows Ariana Grande’s declination of an appearance on the program due to “emotional reasons,” following the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller.
While Ye will appear as a musical guest on the show and will likely debut a new song from the album, he is also set to appear in one of SNL’s renowned comedy sketches, headed by Star Wars actor Adam Driver.
‘Yandhi‘ follows Lil Wayne’s long-awaited album ‘Tha Carter V,’ which just released after five years in the making.
