Sweden will be hosting DOTA’s biggest tournament in 2020 when The International returns to Europe.

The announcement was made prior to The International 9 Grand Final between Team Liquid and OG.

This will be the first TI held in Europe since the first incarnation of the event back in 2011 in Cologne, Germany.

Since the first TI, Seattle, Vancouver and now Shanghai have hosted the premiere esports competition boasting some of the largest prize pools ever up for grabs.

The winner of this year’s tournament will be taking home over $15,000,000.

Each TI has broken its own prize pool record entirely through crowdfunding. This year, over $34,000,000 has been raised, which makes it the largest esports prize pool in history. The winner of this year’s TI will recieve over $15 million in prize winnings, meaning that each team even outearned the winner of Fortnite World Cup’s solo competition.

Stockholm’s mayor Anna König Jerlmyr said the city is excited to be hosting this global celebration. “The passion for DOTA runs deep,” she said in the announcement video.

“We are honored to host the world in cheering on your favorite teams… as they compete for the most prestigious trophy in all of esports.”

With a European team taking home the Aegis in 2019, defending it in 2020 on home soil will prove to be a worthwhile experience.
