Are Diablo 2 Resurrected’s servers down? Here’s everything we know about the ongoing matchmaking issues.

UPDATE: Following continued server and matchmaking issues in Diablo 2 Resurrected, Blizzard has written a lengthy statement to address the concerns, the cause and their plans moving forward.

To put it very simply, the issue is being caused because the game is using twenty-year-old code that hasn’t transitioned well to modern hardware. Blizzard also said that ‘player behaviour’ is also a factor, in that there are more people playing D2R today than there was in 2000 and the way they play has also evolved. Essentially, gamers play a lot smarter these days, and their pursuit of the right build, rather than simply letting the game wash over them, has also placed a strain on the severs.

Blizzard are working on fixing all problems and are also aiming to make the game more suitable for modern gamer habits. In the meantime, they’re implementing a queue system. This is so that the servers don’t become overwhelmed by players while the game is being fixed. This essentially means only a certain amount of players can log in at a single time. When the server is full, players will enter the queue.

Naturally, this has not gone down well on Twitter, with some players furious that they need to queue to play a game they’ve paid for. While Blizzard’s logic is sound, it’s not something modern consumers will want to hear, especially when they could just play something else.

Many are arguing that the company should have resolved these issues before the game released and that players have better things to do than wait in queues. Calls for Blizzard to offer a refund are also growing.

The game has already received updates designed to fix these bugs, but it was this scheduled maintenance that seemed to cause the servers to drop.

Once Blizzard confirmed the maintenance was over, Twitter users barraged Blizzard with messages reporting that they were still unable to access Battle.Net. Some even reported losing several hours of gameplay progress.

While servers returned to normal on Sunday 9, they have since gone down again at the time of writing, leaving players once again in purgatory rather than the burning hells they were hoping to explore.

Since the release of Diablo 2 Resurrected some fans have criticised Blizzard for their lack of communication regarding the game’s various issues. On this occasion Blizzard has acknowledged the outage, telling players they expect a resolution within the hour.
