Actor Tim Downie, who plays Gale in Baldur’s Gate 3, shared which ending he thinks is the best fit for his character.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive branching narrative means characters can complete their journeys in wildly different places. No one exemplifies this more than Gale, as the Wizard of Waterdeep’s endings range from blowing himself up to save the Sword Coast to ascending to godhood.

Given the game’s emphasis on player choice, there’s no canon ending here, but in an interview with Fall Damage, Tim Downie discussed which Gale ending he thinks is the most fitting for the character.

Discussion of Gale’s potential endings starts at 7:25.

“When I was told Gale could become a god, I was like yeah, I’m going to become a god. That sounds absolutely awesome,” Downie says.

By encouraging Gale’s ambitiousness throughout the game and allowing him to reforge the Crown of Karsus, the Wizard can ascend to godhood, becoming the God of Ambition.

That can lead to a couple of results depending on how Gale feels about Mystra at this point, but it’s possible for a romanced Gale to ascend his partner, allowing them to live happily ever after in the realm of the divine.

However, that wasn’t the only conclusion he finds appealing, as Downie expressed appreciation for the ending where Gale returns to Waterdeep and becomes a professor of Illusion magic at Blackstaff Academy – the same institution where he studied as a boy.

“The idea of a quieter ending for Gale sits very comfortably as well. The idea of the Blackstaff Academy. Living quietly, bookish, and being quite, you know, sort of just happy.”

Ultimately, Downie thinks either godhood or the quiet life would suit Gale, saying “For me, it would be one of those.”

Still, he does make a point that seems to tip the scales in one direction: “And also you get the holidays as well with the teacher. Because being a god is honestly, the hours are dreadful.”
