There are several different ammo types in Apex Legends which offer certain advantages over others, according to a Respawn Entertainment developer.

Apex Legends is like most other battle royales in regards to having many different weapon and ammo types.
However, most of the other games just have different ammo types for different guns, while Apex Legends separates itself from other games by having different ammo types actually causing different effect to enemies.

Respawn didn’t really make it known that the different ammo types do different things in Apex Legends but it appears that some players at least had some type of idea this was the case.
Sean Slayback, a Senior Designer at Respawn, confirmed what the different ammo types currently do in Apex Legends in a response to a fan question.

Current state of live game- 1) All ammo types will slow enemies down when you hit them. 2) Energy ammo doesn't have extra shield breaking power. 3) Energy ammo projectiles aren't slowed by drag and have the fastest flight velocity in each weapon class

How does each ammo type in Apex Legends differ?
In the current state of Apex Legends, Slayback says all ammo types slow down your enemy when you hit them. And while no ammo class has extra shield breaking power, Energy ammo isn’t slowed by drag and has the fastest flight velocity of all the munition types.
This is all interesting information to those who didn’t know it before. It’s also nice to know that all of the ammo will rip through your shield at an equal pace.
It’s likely Energy ammo just feels stronger since it will shoot faster than any other ammo type currently in the game.
For a visual representation of what each of these ammo types look like in action, YouTuber staycation has uploaded an in-depth breakdown of each type.
Apex Legends is a game that will receive updates over time in the form of patches and new seasons so it’s possible we could see the ammo change in the future, potentially with new ammo types.
There have been new weapons added in Apex Legends since its launch but all of them have all used ammo that is currently in the game.
