“I personally believe that the value of the work will not be harmed by the recent incident, but I think it is natural for it to be viewed with disbelief. That is very frustrating and sad.”
The incident happened in Fall 2021, with the producer being aware that the girl in question was a minor. He met her on social media and transferred 12,500 yen (around 83 USD) for the pictures. Last week, Itou was arrested after evidence proved him guilty. The authorities uncovered the conversation when Itou’s name came up in a different prostitution case.
After being questioned by authorities, Itou admitted to the accusation, and investigators are now looking into whether Itou solicited more victims. The long-standing work relationship between Makoto Shinkai and Kouichirou Itou began more than two decades ago with the movie The Place Promised in Our Early Days.
According to Times Now News, the producer said during interrogation, “I had a similar exchange with another person, so I can’t remember if it was this girl or not.” Just like fans, the director is completely baffled by the arrest, and it’s safe to say that they won’t be working together.
